EVER SINCE the rise of graphically stunning computer games on the PC they've garnered a lot of attention due to their demands on enthusiasts' hardware and increasingly realistic gameplay.
But the fact is that far more gaming is done on consoles than on expensive, tricked-out high-end PCs. The Sony Playstations, Microsoft Xboxes and Nintendo gadgets get most of the gaming use all over the world.
If you're into console gaming, then maybe you'll like this list of the Top 10 computer console games of all time at V3. µ
My kids, my neighbors kids, the next neighbors over, and my girlfriend's kids all have Super Mario Bros on their DSs. Why? Because we parents know it's a quality game, why spend money on some crap no-name game when you can buy one that the kids will play for months - and the adults will play a bit, too. It's basically a re-package of Mario Bros 3 without the racoon suit.
Saying Super Mario Bros is irrelevent today is, well, an irrelevent comment. :)
I would say more hours spent on PC gaming than all the consoles combined, all my friends better/worse halves spend hours on expensive machines playing solitaire and that won't be listed in gaming and how about people deciding to play mine sweeper whilst waiting for the kettle to boil ;-)
First, I've been playing video games since arcades and Atari. Second, I absolutely love the games on the list.
There was one good point made in a with this year's Top 100 All time games (besides the normal 'everyone's got their own opinions, and surely you might think this game is better than that game...' etc.)
As mentioned, I love those games. As an example, The Legend of Zelda for NES is classic, and will forever have a place in my heart. When do classic games no longer get to own the charts though? I mean, while Super Mario Bros. and Zelda were the kings of their time, today's games are truly advanced. The games we play today actually look like the covers of the games we bought as children (i'm a '78) The great games of the past don't even hold a candle to the complexity, graphics, controls, sound, innovation and realism of today's games. I will never forget the first time I played Super Mario Bros. for NES. Kids these days sure do have it made, but few of them will probably ever even play Super Mario Bros. Heck, even Super Mario Bros. 3 is probably much more of a masterpiece than the original (btw, there's some Japanese dude on utube that beats SMB3 in 11 minutes, it's insane, he hardly touches the ground on the last few levels). I know this sounds totally blasphemous. I just wonder how long the greats can hold on. Already, I'm seeing many trickle down off lists.
