Fermi reviews bonanza

Get them while they're hot
Mon Mar 29 2010, 16:46

GPU VENDOR Nvidia launched its next graphics chip code-named Fermi last Friday and the market breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Over the weekend reviews have been sprouting like mushrooms after a rain showing off the real thing™ in all its glory, along with lots of benchmarks of Nvidia's Fermi based GTX480 and GTX470 reference cards.

Going into a sort of analogy that even Jen-Hsun Huang would like, the Green Goblin has come up with what looks like an American 1970s muscle-car. The GeForce GTX 480 is powerful, no doubt awesomely so, according to the reviews we've read, and has given Nvidia back a slim performance lead. It's also massively complex, hot and draws a lot of juice. The jury's still out on how much power these cards draw until the OEMs come back with their PCIe certifications, or not.

We think a lot of ink will be spilled on this last point.

While reviewers are certain the chip is an achievement for Nvidia and that the company has retaken the crown from its long-time rival, AMD, they fall short of writing a blank cheque for Fermi as availability and power and heat questions have been raised. For example, reviewers are getting one set of numbers for power consumption, while Nvidia is guaranteeing it is considerably lower.

Let's face it, most enthusiasts will only care about framerates, not about the economics or technical nuances of making such a chip work, though Anandtech has a quote on its review that puts it into perspective, mind you. If you want to see what Nvidia has put on the table, you can read through these reviews. In no order at all, here's what we've picked up on the radar:

the wrong effect!

I just checked a few online e-tailers, and 5850 & 5870 prices have actually gone up. This would appear to have been the exact opposite reaction that consumers would have wanted.

USER & False Door to Eternity

Lately USER, an Egytian whom used plenty of false names, like Mayor or Vizier, has come into news. Computing IS USER Playground. Hee at theINQ, WE ARE FANTASY. Something USER Love to Play,On Others. While commanding Others.

Ancient Egyptian noble known as Useramun, called User was one of the great figures of the reign of Thutmose III, from the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt. He held numerous posts, including that of vizier and Governor of Thebes, and was honored on numerous occasions by the king.[1]

He had two tombs in the Theban Necropolis (opposite Luxor, in Egypt), TT61 and TT131, the later of which is decorated with scenes from the Litany of Re.

Since My Massive HeadWound & Being run Over By Vechile, That Door to Immortality Seems More Shut Deal. Where Are Promises Once Life Has Ended. Only User Tomb Remains, User Door to Afterlife, Too got ReUSed in Roman Structure.
