Samsung is first with 40nm memory shipments

32GB for server applications

KOREAN MANUFACTURER Samsung Electronics has started shipping samples of its 40nm, 32GB memory module for server applications, staking its claim to be the first to market.

The high density modules have been developed to work on advanced servers, according to the firm, and especially those that require both high performance and high density features. Predictably, they also offer low power consumption and other energy saving benefits.

In a gushing announcement, Soon-In Cho, president for the firm's memory division, said, "Samsung continues to set the pace in advance memory for high-end server applications by offering 40nm-class 32GB memory modules to reach previously unattainable levels of system capacity."

The 32GB RDIMM is made up of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips, and Samsung said that this could lend itself to big server applications of up to 192GB per unit.

Cho added, "Our highly successful implementation of 40nm-class technology is indicative of our determination to move toward the 30nm-class process node in the second half of this year. Our 30nm-class technology will provide even more advanced memory solutions for high-end server and PC applications." µ

36GB of chip memory gives 32GB of system memory. On server memory modules there are 9 bits per byte. 8 for data storage and 1 for HW error correction. Each of the 36 4GB tied double modules IS contributing 2 bitS to a 72 bit word (64 data bits & 8 error bits)

This gives 2*4*4GB. The extra doubler is that the 4GB modules are in tied pairs giving a total of 72 4GB chips actually used.

Does this add up?

The article says "The 32GB RDIMM is made up of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips" which is = to 144 Gb, which converts to 18GB.
