Consumers don't give a monkey's about the Ipad

Only fanbois and tech press
Mon Mar 29 2010, 10:30

WHILE YOU'VE BEEN reading press releases published as news about the Ipad for months, it would appear that Apple's hype has not gotten through to the great unwashed.

According to an NPD Group survey of 2,000 adults 18 years of age and older, only the terminally sad are interested in buying Jobs' Mob's netbook without a keyboard.

Apparently the demographic group most interested in the Ipad are younger adults and those who buy whatever Steve Jobs tells them is good.

Overall more than 66 per cent thought that they will buy an Ipad when hell freezes over.

More than 60 per cent of those who already own Apple gear thought they will give the Ipad a miss.

Only 18 per cent of all consumers surveyed expressed a real interest in owning an Ipad. Most of them were the 27 per cent of 18-34 year olds and 24 per cent of Apple owners who said they were extremely or very interested. Mind you, they didn't commit to buying one, they just said they were very interested.

According to NPD, consumers think the Ipad is too expensive.

Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD said that the most interested potential Ipad customers see it primarily as a music device or for its Internet access capabilities.

"Considering what people are planning to use the Ipad for, it's not hard to understand why people who have these capabilities on other devices, such as the Ipod Touch or a notebook/netbook, may not want to spend $500 or more on a similar device," he said. µ

pointless..

i didnt qualify for the survey i guess, im on several sites for them. and im vary interested too. thought i've never owned a apple product before, unless you count old broken mac's in the back of my truck for 15 minutes to goto a dump yard.

unless apple releases more products it will sink the failboat. thats why we have so many, and cant upgrade our iphone software. cause if we dont buy something knew apple every 1 -2 years. how will 50k people keep the company going year after year.

lets all just pray they dont make routers or a search engine, then even china and auzzies wont need to fight for cencorship, jobbs will do it for them.

Ipad
beanie babies.

Just because 500k are buying it doesn't mean it makes sense. Could simply mean 500k people are true blue idiots.

Just like my other two examples.

Whiney Apple fans

It's incredible to see how they flock to whine about how evil the author is. First of all just because a lot of people preordered it doesn't mean this article isn't correct, I'll bet you that the majority of the people who ordered it don't know the same as we do, like the lack of multitasking, or the fact that you have to pay 600+ if you want an Ipad with 3G. Someone wrote he sees this as an Ebay item in a few years, and yeah I agree because people will see that they are better off with their Ipod touch.

smarmy patronising promises

apple doesnt just sell you products, it sells a lifestyle and welcomes you into their extended family.
this works well socially inadequate people who feel they need to spend money to be popular but it is a despicable heinous insult to people who think for themselves and base their judgement on facts instead of bells and whistles and promises of popularity and success.
once youve paid, the smiles turn to scowls but by then its too late - theyve got you by the short and curlies.

Hmm

It's interesting that so many people get so upset by an article published on The Inquirer.

It should be obvious to all who comes here that they put a special spin on all their gossipy articles. This is an article for thinking people who can laugh about themselves. The Inquirer chose quite obvioulsy to be confrontive, to go for the "glass is half full and Jobs will charge you for the rest" kind of mentality.

This is the reason why I was reluctant to buy an iPhone. I did not wish to be associated with the Apple Crowd and be seen as an humorless, pretentious twit.

Apple is just a company selling silicone and hype, like any other in the business. Relax and try not to take it personal when someone jokes about your favourite brand.

@ oohmyygoood

The 18% was of all users polled (2000) which is 360 people. They said most of those were part of the group that own Apple gear (36%). So, i don't know where you got 40%, but the number quoted was 18%... i'd say 66% saying "not interested" is more solid than 18% saying they're interested (not "i already pre-ordered mine"... guess they didn't)

my life is now complete

i was indifferent about the ipad, i felt i had no need for such a device in my life

then i saw a presentation by steve jobs and suddenly, without emotion or thought, i could feel myself becoming enamoured with the thing. i was uncontrollably convinced by his words. my mouth hung open, my eyes glazed over and i spoke in a monotonic voice:
"i-must-buy-an-ipad"
kinda like wearing a brain slug in futurama.
now i am a total fanboi with no self-will, no independant thought and no control over my finances.

iPad is the Smartphone killer

Because everything you do on a smartphone can be done better on an iPad with a much larger screen. Except phone calls, that is. For that any cheapo cell phone will do, even one from 10 years ago.

Nick, Nick, Nick...

It's obvious you lust after the iPad. Just give in. You know you want to.

Either that, or get a haircut and a real job. You know you need to.

Or, you could camp out outside a Microsoft store waiting for the M$Tablet.

IPAD IS A LOSER

There are going to be a bunch of disappointed people when the IPAD finally launches. Under powered, overpriced.

This thing will seem fine to everyone who pre-orders it until they realize they've been screwed over somehow.

ipad possibilities

I'm not interested in an i-whatever but.. It would be nice to have a giant remote similar in size, etc as an i-pad that had the following features.
1. Ability to download movies on the fly.
2. Ability to WIRELESSLY send said movies to my old black and white 13inch telivision through an analogue signal or some such nonsence. :P
3. Ability to work with the movies, as in "pause, click on actor, click whois actor, click other movies with said actor, click unpause".

It must be marketed as a remote/w built in player and thus have a price below 200 dollars. I'm currently paying 20 dollars a month for anonymous vpn so I would suggest no more than 20 dollars a month for the unlimited movie rentals with "new release" costing extra.

I doubt the i-whatever can do this and if they suddenly patent this, sue their butts cuz there is nothing new in this. It's just a glorified remote.

Meh...

I'm sure more than 25% of people are "very interested" in flying cars, but that doesn't mean they will buy one, or even actually drive one if they get it for free. This kind of statistics is meaningless.

Most people interested in the iPad don't understand what it is. It's not a laptop, it's not a video conferencing device, it's not an internet browser (except in a very basic sense). It's basically a portable movie player. Apple are just trying to push it so they can make money selling films through iTunes, as they already do with music.

And, even as a movie player, it will probably fail, because it's simply the wrong size. Too big to be truly portable, too small to watch HD. I'd rather get a high-end laptop with a swivel touchscreen, even if it's a bit heavier and more expensive. At least it can multitask and run any software I want.

iPad is a winner

No matter what Nick and other press say the iPad is already a winner. It is so fantastic a product that HP is now releasing a product they had developed - and foolishly abandoned - 3 years ago their own slate. So unlike the iPhone where companies have taken years to catch up, HP was already ahead and went to sleep. But that was due to idiot Carly Fiorina's doing...

With contracts for the screens which cost about $80 totaling a billion, you can already see that apple has committed to 12 million ipads, which is in line with the estimates of about 6 million per year. This is a successful product by any measurement. Apple knows that people who couldn't afford a $1000 laptop will be very keen on a $500 simplified device... so this fills a gap in their product line doesn't cannibalize their very profitable laptop division, and adds 3 billion a year in sales plus all the other downstream revenue they derive.

Apple is primarily a hardware company and one cannot expect that every new device is going to create a big change; in the case the iPad it adds incremental revenue.

Just admit it, this is a far superior product to the Apple TV or the other minor products they have made and another gutsy move by Jobs to try a fresh tack in a category that has failed miserably like Fujitsu who charged $4000 for their touchscreen tablets years ago...

Apple is firing on all cylinders and they are now worth over 200 billion market cap, clearly the financial people see the ALL GOOD THINGS apple is doing lately.

And let's not forget that Apple forced Kindle to lower its royalties from the super-greedy 65% they were charging to match apple's 30% for e-books.

Means nothing.

Im going to hazard a guess here, 500,000 pre sales do not mean anything, those kind of stats are figures from retailers, most sales figures you see on the net are retail sales not consumer sales, you wont know them because you wont know what is selling, for instance if pre orders are being taken how many of those actually buy the thing, when the PS3 launched way back sales looked great, the company i work with brought a shed load which we were not able to sell, most goods of this nature are sale or return which mean early sales data counts for bugger all as it may get returned, apple will not advertise those figures. also regardless of the figures stated in this article a true poll is impossible to get, for instance how many of you actually take time to answer these questions, secondly the questions asked are not in the public domain meaning they might be loaded questions either for or against the subject matter depending on who made up the questions and who is paying for it.

so all in all this is all a pile of crap!

personally i doubt the true figures are as high as them, but who knows, we sure as hell wont, if you start seeing price cuts then you can be fairly certain sales are crap.

Internet capabilities

I wanted one. A nice, big tablet device for a large-screen internet experience around the house without lugging so much as a netbook about. (I confess I need constant access to the net, even while watching TV) I wanted it to get at the touchscreen technology that I've enjoyed so much on the iPhone. However, the price murders my interest as much as the lackluster feature set. No thanks! I'll probably go for a tablet from someone else, if I can stand their touchscreen.

Considering the iPad's capabilities, and the fact that you don't really own it after you buy it (you have to get Apple's approval to run anything that didn't come with it), and the fact that similar devices that are NOT locked into Jehovah Job's Will are coming out in the sub-$200 range, it seems to me that only a monkey's would buy it.

The company began taking preorders for the iPad on March 12, promising to get the device to eager buyers by its store launch date of April 3rd. Customers who placed pre-orders by March 27 will receive the device by that date, where Saturday delivery is available, but Apple said Sunday that new pre-orders won't be shipped out until April 12.

The Cupertino, Calif., company declined to give a reason for the shipping delay, but said would-be customers can still pre-order the iPad for in-store pickup on April 3, or purchase the device in stores that day.

The iPads going on sale will connect to Wi-Fi networks only and cost $499, $599 or $699, depending on the data storage capacity.

Versions that also can connect to "3G" cellular networks are expected to go on sale in late April for $629, $729 or $829. International releases also are planned for later in April.

Removing keyboard and cover from a portable

isn't all that much innovation.

You can already get an LCD panel to hang on the wall that plays videos, about the only use I see for the form. Will soon be similar hardware at half the price, too.

The Ipad is even too big to lug around as a status symbol, and since a slippery little package, the likely drop would ruin your image in more than one way.

I too have noticed the disconnect between hype and apparent interest; even the fanboys seem to be asking WHY they might want one.

Product in Search of a Market

The iPad appears to be a product in search of a market more than a truly viable product. As announced the product is lacking in a number of areas and grossly overpriced. Tablet units have been around for a number of years with only minimal success. The iPad is more like an over-sized PDA, and has no clear market. the Apple fanboys will love it, but little more than that.

I agree for most part

I like my Mini Mac and the iPad looks interesting. If it has a long battery life and great sleep mode it could be a handy web tool from getting recipes for dinner too banking and such.
The price and the non user replaceable battery (and the whole battery program in general) makes this thing a no go for me.
I hear when you send it in for a battery they just give you another unit. That would worry me about banking with it.
After removing the proprietary Windows 7 infestation from my Acer Timeline it will continue to be my banking computer along with anything else like it, shopping online and such. I can remove the drive and DOD wipe it at will.
Don't worry there will be plenty of competition coming out if the iPad does well. I will keep my eyes out for a aluminum Acer one running Android.

Sorry...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news to you, but I've already read multiple articles that are showing the iPad is on it's way to beating out the iPhone in sales. This obviously shows the opposite of what you are saying. 2000 people do not speak for the 307,000,000 people in the country. I'm not a huge iPad fan and am still on the fence about getting one, but really these statistics are useless when you compare them to actual sales. Sorry man...

Where's the Beef

For the money.. you gain actually nothing. It is not as portable than a current mobile phone. It is just between any netbook and a smart mobile phone.

Using it .. people will say it is just a show-off. So you will be branded a show-off. Shallow etc.

I rather be smart and wait. There are devices coming out this year that will be a much better buy.

This is journalism?

A bunch of selectively chosen statistics. Whoop de do. You could look at those, or at the fact that the iPad pre-orders are now above the amount available for launch day. Or, you could probably pull some other set of data out of your you-know-what. Time will tell, and in the meantime, maybe you should write some actual stories instead of throwing out 'data' to support your dislike of Apple.

Blah blah blah

How can you honestly think consumers aren't interested in the iPad? It obvious you WANT the iPad to fail. I'm sorry to tell you that it won't... It's going to be a huge success. How do I know? Because my iPhone says so.

Since the first day I got my iPhone I've thought, "Man if this only had a bigger screen I wouldn't even need a laptop". Enter iPad. Now my laptop will stay at home 90% of the time. Again, how do I know this? Because it would already be that way if my iPhone screen wasn't so small.

Apple brainwashing

Apple is good at brainwashing consumer's into buying a product. Apple does not have that success in other countries. I guess they are a little smarter. I see the iPad as a big Ebay item in a few months. I can't imagine how many will find holding a iPad for any length of time enjoyable.

I see that Nick is out hit whoring again

putting a negative spin on what are rather positive numbers. NPG are saying that, before they even hit the shelves, 18% of all buyers and 27% of 18-34 year olds are seriously interested in getting one. Those percentages translate into some rather large numbers even just in the US of A.

The thing that Nick seems utterly unable to grasp is that the real target for this thing isn't the technical cognoscenti, but the more casual and inexperienced user. I expect that this is the kind of thing that your granny could cope with quite happily, without all of the complexity and boot time of a full PC. It's an appliance, just like the TV or radio, and if Apple have done things right then it's going to be as easy and attractive to use as those devices.

Lies and statistics...

Sigh. Here we go again. You could also have titled the same set of statistics "One in five people interested in buying an iPad!", but that wouldn't suit your predetermined story. I really do not see how you could justify the "no-one gives a monkey's" line with those stats - if it was 1%, then yes. But 27% of the prime demographic? That adds up to a whole barrelful of monkeys, methinks.

18% is a BIG number

That was an incredibly glass half empty way of looking at the stats.

So 18% are genuinely interested before the product has even launched? That's a BIG number!

And 40% of people currently owning Apple gear is interested? That's a HUGE number!

My bet is it'll be a pretty big success. As big as the iPhone? Who knows. Time will show.
