HPs Slate is slated for late September release

Price and availability out
Fri Mar 19 2010, 17:05

BASED UPON A REPORT in the Spanish paper Clipset, we will see the HP Slate hit doorsteps and shop shelves this September for a €400 fee.

Clipset also has its hands on the specifications, and out of good faith, which we are of course full of, we will take them as fact.

Clipset, which has some very grubby looking photos of the Slate, reports that it has an Atom CPU, Flash Support, USB connections, memory card reader and a webcam. Thinking about it, our grandmas could have worked those out.

Anyway, its probably going to come shipped with Windows 7 as well, so it will be handy if one of your table legs is a couple of centimeters shorter than the other three.

If you haven't already bought and got bored of the Ipad by September, you can buy a Slate then. µ

Stop the fanboy-ism!

Come on guys ... they're both nice pieces of hardware. The thing is that the iPAD is a little on the expensive side. They should have both been priced around 400$ and people would chose them for the features that each of the have to offer. If you want Windows compatibility , flash and USB .. get the SLATE. If you want 10 hours of battery life, a slim and light device and are satisfied with what the Apple Store has to offer, get the iPAD. They're not bad at all.

MICROSOFT HAS ALREADY FAILED

so does this mean you have to pay full price for Apps on the HP, like £100 for office etc

On the Ipad the Iworks suite is about $9.99, also as office and other apps are not designed for a touch screen of such a small screen whats the usability like?

Also the screen on the HP is TFT- LED which is a cheaper low quality screen to the IPS-LED panel in the Ipad.

Oh and correction $116 gets a new Ipad if the battery fails, but as the ipad battery is a 1000 should lat 5 years or normal use charging cycle battery unlike the HP which is only 300.

You can expect to pay $89 battery replacement total $267 over 5 years for the HP!!!!!!!! that gets you a repair not a new unit.

Microsoft released the touch notebook platform about 7 years ago and since then sales have been really poor so much so that the team at Microsoft has been closed.

So are Microsoft actually gong to specifically design apps for the small touch screen?

Do you also have to Run spyware and antivirus on the HP? as its running windows 7?

Ipad Failure

I am curious about how many returns they will have. Many people are unaware that there is no flash support....You cant multitask.. No webcam and of course Apple charges more for accessories. Not to mention if your battery dies they charge you $116 replace the unit. Dont forget to back up ALL THE TIME or you can lose your data. Money hungry apple.

I'm getting the HP Slate.

I'll get an HP Slate. It's basically a 8.9-inch netbook with an accelerometer and an HP TouchSmart UI.

If I got an iPad I'd have to give up Firefox and all it's add-ons. If I got an iPad I wouldn't be able to use Hulu or Netflix. I wouldn't be able to download anything I see on the web. There is no save file system or multitasking on iPad. With the iPad you can't have an instant messaging client or Skype running in the background or stream Pandora, Last.FM while you work or chat. I couldn't dock an iPad and use Microsoft Office. I couldn't print from an iPad for free. Setting up network or USB printing on the HP Slate won't be a problem.

Also the HP Slate has a memory card slot built-in while the memory card adapter is extra on the iPad (at Apple's absurd prices). The HP Slate has a camera which is something Apple will definitely have in iPad 2.0. The USB port on the Slate also opens up infinite possibilities of what devices you can use with the HP Slate. I guess the difference is that the HP Slate is a real computer while the iPad is not a real computer.

I love the pic

Fabulous picture on the Clipset site. Looks the surround is coated in silver glitter. Should be a big hit with 6 year old girls.

Rivals have no idea

The success of the iPad will be down to the GUI and the physical size being just the right size to hold and not having to squint to read a page.

So far all the pretenders are making small tablets or putting on Windows 7.

The average person on the street finds Windows or Linux or Mac OS too slow to start up and too complex to use.

This is why the iPad will be a success, it's not the fact it is a bigger iphone.

The iphone is a success due to its GUI and the iPad will be too once people actually use one.
