AT A RECENT event at Technicolor's premises in London, the company announced its push into the 3D market.
To this end it showed off Hitachi's new Wooo H001 mobile handset, which is capable of displaying 3D content thanks on the 854x480, 3.1-inch stereoscopic screen.
The screen's design means that the 3D display can be used without glasses, but it does need to be viewed at a specific angle in order to get the full 3D effect.
The image is excellent and playback is smooth, even when playing a high definition video clip of the upcoming animated movie 'How to train your dragon', which we weren't allowed to film for licensing reasons.
Unfortunately the H001 isn't going to be coming to Europe, but other manufacturers are likely to be bringing out similar devices in the future. µ
So Nintendo just announced that their next handheld, the 3DS, will have 3D touch screens without the need for glasses. I wonder if it's using technology similar to this.
It would suck to buy this as a gift for a well loved 3 year old, and then discover that their eyes aren't far enough apart to use the thing comfortably.
Btw, the 3 year old is hypothetical, I don't have anybody under the age of ten that I know well. Just saying.
"'How to train your dragon', which we weren't allowed to film for licensing reasons."
Of course not, in some backwards countries its not even been released yet.
If Micro$oft etc gave up their 3D patents we could have 3D without glasses everywhere. I dont get why ppl would buy 3D with glasses. I hope the patents expire soon
