Google takes aim at your TV

Sony and Intel join Logitech for Android television
Thu Mar 18 2010, 15:17

AS IF HAVING CONTROL of your web surfing, mobile phone and social notworking wasn't enough, Google now wants to take over your television set, too.

According to an article in the New York Times, Google has formed a partnership with Sony, Intel and Logitech to enable TV viewers to use web applications as easily using their TV remote controls.

It will work by using a Google TV set-top box that will run the Android Linux-based operating system that's currently used on a number of smartphones, and opening it up to developers. This will transform TV from what we have currently, where web content is available but limited as to what sites we can access.

A developer toolkit might be provided by Google in a matter of months, with products based on the software available as soon as this summer.

The New York Times quotes anonymous sources for this information, but something can be gleaned from the fact that Google and Intel have kept quiet about the project rather than issuing denials. A Sony spokesperson pleaded ignorance.

The article also states that Intel has been hiring for Android programmers who can help transfer its software technology from PCs to mobile devices and TV screens.

For its part, Logitech is reportedly working on a keyboard that can work as a television remote control.

The news comes in the same week that Facebook started to overtake Google.com traffic for the first time. If search advertising revenues fall, Eric Schmidt and his gang will need to get more money from somewhere to maintain earnings growth, especially as China is starting to look like a dead end for the company.

Aside from the obvious profit motive, Google's move was inevitable as television is still the most important communications medium in a lot of people's lives.

An Internet TV platform has been tried before, notably by both Microsoft and Apple, but it was never going to reach consumers as effectively as a Google controlled television device might.

It could also make Rupert Murdoch angrier than he already is with Google over the newspaper business, especially if it starts to put a dent in the money he makes from his various television properties. µ

So, tv as a monitor...

I already use my TV as a monitor, wireless keyboard with a trackpad. This is just a bit more integration.

The difference being, harder/impossible to upgrade one piece at a time.
