THE SHY AND RETIRING, softly spoken Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will have to write a cheque for $106 million to an outfit called VirnetX.
VirnetX apparently owns patents that covers ways to secure virtual private network connections. The technique involves the use of encrypted data so that snoopers can't look at it.
A Texas jury awarded VirnetX $106 million after determining Microsoft violated two of its patents.
In a statement, VirnetX said that $71.75 million was for infringing on one patent, and $34 million for the other.
In its own statement, the Vole not surprisingly said it is "disappointed by the jury's verdict." It still believes that it didn't infringe the patents and plans to appeal. µ
M$ caught with their own tactics and shot with their own kind of weapon. They don't like it when they are the target.
Yeah, it could always be worse.
On the other paw, and much as I absolutely adore seeing Micro$haft take it in the shorts at any opportunity... one has to wonder about a "patent" that seems to consist of "method to secure a network connection by encrypting data".
In the old days, werent patents required to be "nonobvious" or something? This doesnt seem like it should qualify.
lucky they have a legal system that they can fall back on.In some places i know claiming a patent right against an organisation is a self imposed death penalty. They will kill you before you get to court
