Component shortages wallop PC makers

Just when things were getting better
Wed Mar 17 2010, 10:49

JUST AS PC makers start to crawl out of the mire of the recession it is looking like they are finding it hard to get components for their machines.

Taiwanese industrial PC manufacturers have been moaning to Digitimes that they are facing short supplies of parts.

Apparently this is driving up the normal six to eight weeks delivery time to 10 to 20 weeks.

The problem seems to be that crucial components are being snapped up by the larger PC ODMs, OEMs and consumer electronics makers.

Industrial or 'white box' PC makers' orders are generally smaller in volume, so components suppliers usually give the larger outfits priority.

The industrial PC makers said that if they want to secure components supply, they are having to pay 20 to 30 per cent more.

However they are not the only ones suffering. Some of the bigger PC makers such as Dell have also been having trouble getting parts like DRAM. Other PC makers have been struggling with staff shortages. µ

Hire workers to make things? That's just crazy talk. Do you have any idea what that would do to their stock price??

Or how to poke consumers

Tell the media there is a parts shortage to justify a 30% increase in retail prices for pure profit. Bend over folks.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
