Paypal gets physical

Waves the Iphone
Wed Mar 17 2010, 08:00

VIRTUAL MONEY EXCHANGE Paypal has finally introduced the method of initiating payment preferred by all muggers, physical action.

The virtual money outfit teamed up with Bump Technologies to bring motion initiated payment to the Paypal Iphone application. Those who want to transfer money have to either bump or shake their fruity toys to complete the transaction.

This is all possible thanks to software which monitors the accelerometers in phones. Once they acknowledge a bump or shake has occurred, the application, in this case Paypal, gets the go ahead to empty part or all of your account.

Apparently the technology is able to differentiate between accidental and intentional bumps. Technically the underlying software would allow for Iphones and Android devices to bump each other but since Paypal has yet to release an application on the Android platform, so far only Iphone users can make use of this revolutionary, physical money exchange mechanism.

Paypal is of course best known for being pushed down the throat of Ebay sellers as the default method of payment on the auction site. The Iphone application is the firm's bid to move away from just being a way to buy hooky gear from dodgy dealers and get out into the real world.

Incorporating bump technology means that when you lose money through Paypal, you'll really feel it. µ

Go Clubbing!

Won't that be swell, to wake up after a night out at the clubs dancing and find yourself 60 billion dollars in debt.

@queef

Or it could open up Paypal as a viable way of paying for goods, much like a credit/debit card. Another means of authorised payment via the web. If they had facilities to take payment via this method in retail / stations /subways / buses wouldn't that be a really good use of technology?

how pointless can you get?

give these people something to do thats useful

they are obviously bored and have too much time and money on their hands

i suppose a real life application for this function would be for tetraplegic people who store their iphone on their head somewhere?!

really, this is a pointless waste of time and resources!

i'd sack the lot for taking the p*** - they need a reality check

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
