Microsoft showcases Windows Phone 7 Series

Yawn
Mon Mar 15 2010, 17:20

MOBILE ALSO-RAN Microsoft has taken the edge off the bright lights and excitement of Las Vegas by choosing it as the location for the launch of an application framework for developers on its Windows Phone 7 Series operating system.

Yes, the city that never lets you sleep was the scene of a number of announcements from Microsoft, which talked up how the use of 'proven technologies' such as Silverlight (*cough*) - the upstart media streaming application looking for acceptance but so far not finding much - and the XNA framework, whatever that is, when it comes to developing mobile applications and 3D games.

Scott Guthrie, the Vole's corporate vice president of the .NET developer platform, said, "As the browser, server, Web and devices evolve, a focus on delivering consistently great user experiences has become paramount. By extending our familiar platform technologies and tools to phones, Microsoft is delivering the premier application development experience across a variety of devices and form factors."

Excuse us for a moment while we go wash our hands after quoting that bit of shameless drivel.

In case that's not enough for you, Microsoft also launched version 4 of Silverlight, along with an allegedly easy to install package that includes previews of things like Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, and an emulator for application testing.

Microsoft will also offer a marketplace for Windows Phone 7 Series applications, explaining that it will let customers try apps before they buy them.

Which might prove to be a mistake. µ

How old are you?

This piece is ignorant, misinformed, juvenile and pointless. My 12 year old writes with more maturity than you.

I'll get my tech news elsewhere from now on, thanks.

Win Mobi 7 better than apple fraud

Win mobile 7, can't wait. I owned an iPhone for 2 weeks, sold it on ebay, couldn't stand it or iTunes. What a horrid device! Love mu Zune HD, can't wait for Win mobi 7 phones to come out (still love my tilt 2)!

Apple sucks!

iPhone do Flash?

"Adobe and Microsoft are working together to bring Flash Player 10.1 to Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Phone 7 Series."

Lets see how many things this would then be able to do over the iPhone and not cost you a penny?

iPhone doesn't support flash because it would cut into the Apple app store sales. Use any other excuse you like to why the iPhone doesn't have Flash to help you sleep at night but in reality its because Steve Jobs wants your money not your satisfaction. Apples knows what is better for you.

@Lisa T

WOW, I like how you took what someone else said (Tim Bray formerly of Sun Micro-systems and now developing for the Android platform)) and just made it fit Microsoft. You didn't even get the words right, what a horrible job of pledgerism. Grow up and get out of highschool were that kind of crap is actually accepted, and while your at it maybe you should gather up a few facts of your own so you don't sound retarded.

It's a Microsoft Walled Garden

It has become apparent that Windows Phone 7 Series is a Microsoft walled garden. You are forbidden from installing any application that Microsoft hasn't first approved of. You cannot get access to native code. You cannot install a web browser other than Internet Explorer. Microsoft is exercising total control over WP7S, in a way that goes beyond what iPhone ever did.

Bad Reporting

Unless this belongs on a apple web site this is about the worst article I've read on the Windows mobile 7 subject (The author should avoid anything Microsoft related if thats all he can come up with).
And I would use Silverlight any day over flash.

ignorant inq

"...XNA framework, whatever that is"
It is only the framework used to develop games for xbox360. Developers who use xna can then easily port their games to windows and other platforms eg zune, windows mobile.

I've noticed the quality of reporting of the inq has been on a steady decline.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
