BEANCOUNTERS at network equipment maker Gemtek have added up some numbers and decided that shipments of WiMAX gear will double this year.
Last year the outfit shifted 600,000 boxes but this year it thinks it will flog 1.2 million units.
Company managing director Kevin Yang told Digitimes that 70 per cent of the gear will be shipped to India, Southeast Asia and other emerging markets and the remaining to North America.
Gemtek thinks shipments of 3G data cards, 3G routers, fixed home gateways, integrated access devices, femtocells and mobile Internet devices will also contribute significantly to its bottom line this year.
For 2010, Gemtek's shipments of built-in WLAN modules will grow 20 per cent to 25 million units and shipments of integrated WLAN/WiMAX modules will total two million units.
All up, it seems to show that there is really a boom in mobile broadband technology and it is not all just marketing hype. µ
WiMAX in US have great DL/UL speeds reaching 4-8 MB/s but what kills it is unacceptable latency around 100ms. There are numerous test drives from many places on YouTube
Can you play WoW or any other game with such delays which make it in fact to act like a 1000ms/100ms=10 frames per second game??? You can, but you will always lose. If you plan to completely switch land lines to the wireless your kids will be furious.
LTE promises 20ms (means 50 fps) like we have with Comcast cable, but this are only promises, what will be in reality has yet to be seen.
It is absolutely clear to me that the GAMES GAMES GAMES will be able to kill the road to domination for any bad latency network.
