Apple unleashes its giant Iphone

Cuts security measures to boost Ipad sales
Fri Mar 12 2010, 16:12

FRUITY TOYMAKER Apple has let the hoards of salivating fanbois loose on its latest moneyspinner, the Ipad.

Apple took down its online store for a few hours, which usually indicates that Jobs' latest creation is about to drop. Although the date for Ipad pre-ordering had been set some time earlier, the excitable fanbois decided it would be a good use of their time to speculate about some real products hitting Apple's shelves. Chief among which was a six-core Mac Pro.

The problem, for the fanbois at least, was that their technological ineptitude led them to believe that Intel's 'Gulftown' chip would end up in the Mac Pro. Although Intel's Gulftown chip does indeed possess six cores, it is branded as a Core i7 part, not something that Apple bungs into a Mac Pro. Those 'workstation' machines use Intel's Xeon parts, the six-core variant of which is destined to tip up some time after the Core i7-970 and Core i7-980X Gulftown parts that recently broke cover.

Trifling inaccuracies aside, the Ipad did turn up but only for Americans, or so Jobs' Mob thought. It seems that while you do need to input an US delivery address, should you have credit cards registered in other countries, your order will still go through.

As we found out, even if you put in an American address as your registered billing address, the one you would assume would be checked against the registered address of the card, Apple doesn't seem to care. At present orders are taking anything up to 90 minutes to be confirmed by Apple, so impatient fanbois will have to keep an eye on their inboxes while sipping their cappuccinos.

Perhaps it is a sign of desperation that Apple is bypassing widely deployed anti-fraud measures in order to flog as many Ipads as possible.

Apple is no stranger to paper launches, and it is only the Wifi enabled Ipad that will be delivered on 3 April, if you're lucky. Those who want to pay the $130 premium for a 3G radio and lower battery life will have to wait until "late April", which incidentally is the same time as us Brits and the Europeans will be able to buy one, at least without lying about where we all live. µ

"Jobs' latest creation is about to drop".

I am sure they are all hoping for a triple-coiler.

(such lovely imagery in the article, LOL!).

Core i7

I think the thought on that, at least it was for me, was that Apple would put an i7 and supporting chipset in the MacPro and offer a reduced-priced version. $1500 for that CPU/chipset combo, in the MacPro chassis, would've been sweet.
