THE US Federal Court of Appeals has upheld a jury's verdict that Microsoft willfully infringed on patents belonging to i4i.
According to PC World, the Vole was ordered to write a cheque for $240 million to i4i and forced to remove a feature in versions of Microsoft Word starting in January.
The i4i technology at issue was a feature in Word 2003 and 2007 that let people create documents containing 'custom XML'.
Microsoft had asked the appellate court to reconsider its ruling, but the court reaffirmed its decision.
The judges explained that "a reasonable jury could have concluded that Microsoft 'willfully' infringed the '449' patent based on the evidence presented at trial."
The court noted that Microsoft employees attended demonstrations of the i4i software and received i4i sales kits that identified the software as patented technology.
This piece of evidence and others imply that Microsoft was aware of the i4i patent, the decision says.
At the same time Microsoft made no efforts to avoid infringement and internal emails showed Microsoft intended to render i4i's product 'obsolete'. µ
And they don't sneak around and hide behind fake addresses, either. They just go out and steal stuff in broad daylight.
And then send out lawyers to defend their stealing.
And then send out more lawyers to defend the defending of their stealing.
I hope they take it to the Supreme Court, and the latter finally tells the truth:
"If we see your ass one more time here, Mr. Ballmer, we'll have you tarred and feathered and carried out on a stick. We have important things to do."
