Chinese reject HP laptops

Consumer rights exercised
Wed Mar 10 2010, 12:44

IT SEEMS 170 Chinese punters have filed a complaint through their lawyers for the government to recall faulty HP laptops.

According to the Financial Times, the lawyers delivered the complaint to the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ). The Financial Times reports that the Chinese consumers' grievance is based on the same faulty Nvidia chipset that has been plaguing certain HP laptops for at least two years. While Nvidia has acknowledged an overheating issue with its chipset, HP has been more reticent about any problems in its laptops.

The lawyers requested that AQSIQ gets HP to recall the laptops and exchange any faulty hardware for a new product.

One of the issues the Chinese consumers have is that they feel discriminated against by HP's splintered warranty service operation. "We have also noticed that HP in the US offered consumers extended warranty periods for even more models and compensated them for transport costs, but in China, it has not made a statement or offered services, and openly discriminated against Chinese consumers," the lawyers said.

HP hasn't responded to the plaintiffs' attorneys yet but court action is unlikely because there's no class action policy in Chinese law. All they can hope for is compensation and exchanged goods adjudicated through the AQSIQ.

What good might come of this sorry case? Well, as the Financial Times notes, Chinese law has a strict policy on product recalls so this issue could set a precedent for consumer rights in China. µ

legacy of Jen Tsun Huang

China gives us toxic lead paint toys for our kids, poisonous Melamine laced milk for their kids, and we give them defective nVidia chipsets. Seems fair.

Interesting...

Chinese consumers want a recall of defective products - hmmm...how about the hundreds, if not thousands, of American consumers living in homes with unhealthy Chinese drywall?

i was a victim too

I bought a dv9000 one, send it back to hp 4 times (always the same faulty nvidia chip, a 7600 in my case).
They extended the warranty for an extra year or so. Anyway, like 6 months ago it failed again, no warranty same problem, so I ended up with a useless piece of plastic. I tried to sell the working pieces on ebay, but since there are so many laptops like this one that failed, the price of the components was almost zero (the lcd bid was 1 dollar, with only one hour to finish)

same in HK

Perhaps, my compaq has this faulty chip. When I went to service center, a lot of people took their notebook similar model with this problem.
