WHILE THE NASDAQ stock market actually rose on the news that Apple had named a date for its overpriced keyboardless netbook, no one seems to have noticed that the shipping date had slipped.
The rumour mill had been speculating that Jobs' Mob would have to delay the launch of the Ipad but everyone assumed it would have something to do with the Chinese hardware makers that make the thing.
However, when the manufacturers said that everything was on time on their side of the Pacific, the rumour mill started to focus on the one thing that Apple does have direct control of, the Iphone OS.
John Gruber at Daring Fireball claims the software has taken longer to finish than they'd hoped. The problem apparently is in the timing of turning out the software. Obviously on a scale with Duke Nukem on one hand and being on time on the other, a couple of weeks is nothing.
However it is strange that after all this time in development something as basic as an upgrade to the Iphone OS is still not ready. If Gruber is right, then it means that the one component that it should have been easy to get ready in a year is not ready.
We have seen Apple do this before. Its Mac OS X Snow Leopard had a huge number of patches issued fairly soon after its release. If the Iphone OS operating system is similar then chances are that the Ipad effectively will be tested in the marketplace.
Meanwhile the marketing campaign for the Ipad is stepping up. Steve Jobs showed up at the Oscars and it was blogged by someone who actually wrote, "OMG It's Steve Jobs! I'm the Only One Yelling at Him!", and this is someone who needs help, not reading.
Apple advertised the Ipad in a commercial break, ironically just after an Inglorious Basterds actor collected an award for being a jolly good Nazi.
The tame Apple press has been covering the Ipad advert as if it is news. One CNET report even claimed that the ad's music clip will be downloaded a lot on Itunes. Many commented about how low-key and pants the advert was, but said that Apple didn't need it anyway. Huh?
Really what they should be saying is that if you buy this low-powered, overpriced Ipod Touch you sacrifice any credibility you might have as someone who knows technology and your mind is out to lunch with some pathetic bloke who twitters his abject worship of Steve Jobs at the Oscars. µ
Why is it called IPAD
Why is it called IPAD
Oh Nick,
How could you taunt the fanbois so cruelly?
You know they can’t see further than St. Job’s nose! Steve is their leader, their light, their reason for spending obscene amounts of money on fruit-themed-overpriced-toys.
“Steve! Don’t beget us, let us throw our fruit-themed prayer mats on the floor and point them in the direction of Cuppercino, Calf”. “You will do right by us; after all, we’ve spent so much money on your toys in the past and we promise to fork-over ever more borrowed cash just to please your latest iUnbelieveable offering”
Oh, please St. Steve, will you send me one of your black t-shirts? I know if won’t be free, but my mom has agreed to re-mortgage her house to help me fund this as part of my personal fruit-themed epiphany!
I know it’s wrong, Steve and all my not-so-close friends are saying the same thing, but I have to do this. One glimpse of that half eaten fruit and I’m jelly....
I still think you should have chosen a better name though; iPad – sounds like something I put between my ass and the toilet seat, or worse still, something very expensive my wife would use once a month? Never mind, I’ll get used to it.
Lots of hugs and kisses,
Dave xxx
I'm with you Nick, all things that aren't out yet are automatically rubbish. The iPad - a big iPod touch, 3D TV - a joke, electric cars - absurd. The future lies in things we are used to; as market research once revealed to Henry Ford, what people want is a faster horse. Want I want today is a cheaper, lighter, flimsier net-book with smaller keys and a smaller screen that runs Windows 7 very slowly, has two hours of battery life and breaks a week after the warranty is over.
This is the Inq. If you have somehow been redirected from another source and expect 'objective' or 'generous' journalism, then please slowly and calmly close the browser tab. Additionally, if the thought of an ipad fills you with joy, feel free to hit your head against a wall repeatedly.
What is up with Nick Farrell - I mean seriously what is wrong with the guy.
#John:
"The two are normal people, caring little for the why and how."
And of course, such normal people won't be holding an Ipad in one hand and "pinching, tapping, and zooming" with the other... while sitting in a recliner or lying on the rug...
That's what the fanbois, who are really just a slightly different brand of "old school technicians", fail to understand.
Normal people don't care about overpriced products.
The commercial emphasizes domestic use. It shows a man and then a woman, eparately, with the iPad inside an apartment or home. Each is sitting on the sofa or recliner, with legs on the floor or propped on the coffee table. At times the legs are crossed. At other times, the knees are touching with the iPad propped up by the knee area. A couple of shots has each lying on the rug, with the device held by one hand, the other hand pinching, tapping, and zooming.
The casual setting of these scenes restate the idea that this device is for a consumer who is using it in a relaxed setting, doing light stuff, and is exactly what Jobs communicated so clearly during his live demo weeks ago when he lost himself in revery by the playfulness of the mouseless and keyboardless interface.
I already know that old school technicians with ten cables slung around their necks as well as garage tinkerers with peg boards full of screw drivers and cans packed with bots and washers will whine that it's not expandable or that it lacks fifteen ports. However, the couple on the apartment is neither meant to represent technicians nor tinkerers; The two are normal people, caring little for the why and how. These are primarily to whom the device is marketed.
Nick must be doing something right if he gets the fanboys all oh so upset...
Reading the fanboy comments is actually much more fun than reading the article.
As Gizmodo called it: "Your life. In a small, plastic case."
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/images/iProduct.gif
What a wonderfully BIASED article. A. did you say IPad is OVER PRICED??? If IPad is overpriced, what can you say about Kindle? B. IPad is not a net book. Even a moron would know that. Please don't ever call yourself a reporter.
iTampon? Will it be out soon?
Envy is a deadly sin but sometimes it is just pathetic.
All of the above comments just makes me imagine the Ferret sat staring at his Penguin powered pc making a fishing reel motion with his hands...."I got me some fanboys tugging on the bait...."
And for those complaining about the fact Apple fail at capitalisation, welcome to the Inq, proudly typing in the Queen's best English (if she was born on a council estate) and hence ignoring all stupid marketing capitalisation!
Have a nice day.
I knew Farrell had to invoke Godwin's law sooner or later.
It is good to see Nick, once again, herd the Apple Ishepple into a froth!
These common idolmakers are so taken in by the lurid sex of Apple that they can't turn their heads away from Jobs' job.
I hope to divorse myself from these ubiquitous dullards by moving to Google's Android hive asap.
[warning: fail joke ahead]
I want one... one of my bed's legs need some padding.
I only read this because it showed upon the Google News headline page and all I've got to say is I'm not going to bother clicking on anything else just because it's on Google News unless I recognize the source. This has all the journalism skills of a rushed 7th grade assignment. Seriously, what idiot wrote this foolishness. That's 45 seconds I can never get back.
Note to self: don't click on "Inquirer" link.
I love that Google news picked this up and exposed a legion of drooling Apple fanbois to an article outside of Steve Jobs' walled garden.
I thought ranting was for us commenters not for the author of a "publication".
Just so I can educate you a bit if Steve Jobs were to show up in Harvard, or USC, or Yale, or the University of Miami he would be instantly recognized and fawned over by many, especially the biz school crowd. He is a CEO rock star because he took a dying company and converted it into what it is today... certainly a stronger brand than the INQUIRER or.... what's your name again?
Horrible article. I hope your editor reads these comments. I remember my old high school newspaper had better reporters. Comparing Apple with ... I'm not even going to retype your moronic thoughts. Enjoy your "writing" job while you have one.
Ok, we get it. The iPad will be judged as deficient if what one really wants IS a conventional netbook.
But the converse is also true. Apple is betting that there are a whole lot of people that would rather have an easy-to-use, instant-on, zero-maintenance iPad than a miniature version of the frustrating PC they are forced to use at work.
Wake up, take off your geek glasses, and realize that Apple builds products for the rest of us (people who don't love technology for its own sake). And there are more of us than you can possibly imagine. Get over it.
This guy (Nick Farrell) is a reporter? He sounds like a 13 year old mad that his mom wont buy him an iPad so he trashes it to make himself feel better.
The only right fact on this article is that Steve Jobs attended the Oscars. The rest is all manipulated and invented.
What's going on? We are in a country with 10% unemployment and we still have reporters that have no idea of what they are talking about.
Hire a better reporter from the employment queue and fire this incompetent.
Is Nick Farrell being paid to write? Is better for The INQUIRER to let the page blank rather than fill it with this type of trash!!!!!
So please, take your gushing elsewhere.
I appreciated this article, because it's the opposite of what most people have to say about Apple products. Nevermind the fact that they sue every company that has an idea even close to theirs, while stealing other ideas. Or that they commission companies to use child labor. Or that their "innovation" comes at the expense of third-world workers.
Apple is not the end all be all. Maybe if they moved to open source, I'd change my tune.
iPad = fail
The "thing"? Go have fun with some piece of sh** Acer Windbook THING. Oh and when it breaks two days after you buy it, you can blame the Mac Fanboys for appeciating quality when they see it, you dummy.
Google news referred me to this amateur blog. I thought it was a real story -- if this is what passes for news or informed commentary these days then it's official: journalism is dead. The Nazi sentence was hilariously bad though, so there was some entertainment value. It's still sad that it's come to this.
How is it ironic that "Apple advertised the Ipad in a commercial break, ironically just after an Inglorious Basterds actor collected an award for being a jolly good Nazi."?
Ridiculous articles, ridiculous fanboys (on both sides) and ridiculous people calling out fanboys. All of you shut up, I'm the only one who is smart here.
Man, the fanboys sure are in a tissy! The truth hurts sometimes. I swear some people would defend a turd in a box if it had an apple logo on it.
Poor Nick. It's time he gets out of my basement and gets a job.
Hey nice try Nick :) but why change you name to Dave? we did get your point from the top article hehe ;)
I think what angers most people is the hatred of the tone. The tech debate has been there since the beginning and will continue to exist once the device hits the store...
Lol, a lot of people getting mad at this article. All you need is some common sense to realise that what the author is saying is accurate. To the people who say it is not an over priced netbook...How isn't it? Just because Steve Job's says it is not a Netbook does not mean it is not one. It fits the form factor, it makes use of the same kind of low power hardware, and it is meant to be cheaper than a laptop. Except one major issue. It's hardware is substandard compared to other netbooks in it's price range, so the author hit the nail on the head stating it is an overpriced, underpowered netbook. Just because you can't deal with reality while in the dillusional love affair with all things Steve Jobs dosn't mean everyone else has to forego all sense. I would never buy an iPad, and it has nothing to do with if I like Apple or not. It has to do with the fact that I can get 2 quality netbooks with way more features and more power for the price of an iPad.
Bitter and biased and uninformative. Nice gig if you actually get paid to submit this worthless drivel.
What kind of stupid comment was the crack about "Apple advertised the Ipad in a commercial break, ironically just after an Inglorious Basterds actor collected an award for being a jolly good Nazi."
If you are so jealous of Steve Jobs, why waste your time in writing about him???
I will not waste my time reading ANYTHING ELSE you put out.
overpriced? Go buy yourself a Sony reader that's $400, black & white and for the most part only reads books. For $100 more you can get a color book reader that will run thousands of other apps.
Not sure why you wrote this piece of junk article -I can only assume that you are not very smart.
Your personal animus towards all things Apple is incredibly juvenile. If your going to make an attempt at being a reporter, much less a writer, try and actually ascertain the facts.
While your pounding away on your PC, the reality of tech in the world eludes you: Fact: the Iphone is the most successful mobile phone in the world. Over 1 billion applications have been downloaded. Corporations all over the world are competing to have their companies create apps just to be included on this phone.
The IPad is a natural extension of this phone. Whether or not it proves to be popular at the retail level remains to be seen. What is not debatable is the fact that the technology is very user friendly and definitely much more elegant and sophisticated than you give it credit for.
In short, grow up and learn your craft.
Waste of time!! nothing worth reading!!
Are we sure this website isn't part of the Google/Microsoft propaganda machine? Curiously not even Microsoft's propaganda machine works well. Maybe if we all tell them how to do it, then Microsoft's Propaganda 7.0 might work...then again most likely not.
And Nick, try getting a real job and maybe take up meditation or running or something. You are way too bitter, it's not good for your heart.
I read trash from this website. Ill-informed fanbois of any stripe have little place claiming to be journalists, let alone educated. The iPad may (or may not) force others to bring their technology up a notch. No different than the drivel we read as the iMac, OS X, or iPod, or iPhone were brought to market. Each in turn have helped drive better products across their technology segments. The continuous competition between MS and Apple for OS improvements, same said for iPhone/Android or Macintosh lines and their able counterpoints from HP and Sony have all helped benefit all of us.
This twit brings nothing to the discussion. He should go back to his day-job and fire up Duke Nukem.
I plan to get one so I do not have to use the companies equipment to store my stuff.
I can link back to a othe compter VPN style to remote control if I need flash.
Most flash apps I am interested in are difficult to work on a tiny screen.
Perhaps I can tether the ipad using a phone other than iPhone.
Great article for someone that is completely clueless.... Pretty obvious that you are completely bias. Will complain to Google for sending your link to this junk and hopefully your overall website will suffer once your editors realize and read all these comments.
Sounds like you have features similar to the ipad .... overpriced and underpowered ..... the ipad is built perfectly for you.
about as credible and informative a read as the National Inquirer
what's your point? trolling for rumours so you can bad mouth a product you have not even used makes for poor journalism. thanks for the waste of time.
Full disclosure: I own PC and Mac
Nick,
The reason you hate what Apple stands for is because you are boring. Embrace some diversity man.... and incase you didn't know, you have approximately 2.5 years until you are in love with whatever Google/Microsoft makes that is a direct take on the iPad. Apple advances technology, Microsoft steals it. Enjoy your Cornflower blue life.
Ha! You annoy the cult of Apple at your peril. The rabid reaction says a lot more about them than about what you wrote.
iPad == EPIC FAIL
What delay? When announced they said it would be available in *about* 2 months. Well, April 3 is about 2 months.
The logo for this page was: "Wise men make proverbs but fools repeat them". Obviously Nick Farrell is a fool. And Badger, who is forcing anyone to buy an iPad, or an iPhone, or anything else Apple produces? The marketplace will decide if the iPad is a failure, not silly little pundits.
Totally ridiculous article!
Mr. Bezos, this type of negative "journalism" won't save your precious Kindle. Your jealousy speaks louder than words.
@Niall: Jobs is the former CEO of Pixar but these days Jobs does not run Pixar. Jim Morris, John Lasseter and Ed Catmull run Pixar. Jobs sold Pixar 4 years ago to Disney in exchange for a 7% stake in Disney ownership and a seat on Disney's Board of Directors, making Jobs the single largest Disney stockholder. As Disney had a film up for nomination last night (and it won) it was within Jobs' rights to attend. I'm sure there were more than a few big money stockholders from other movie companies in attendance.
I have never seen an article this biased actually make it to print. Even the tone is downright acidic to Apple. Either you lost a great deal of money before their stock went through the roof, you are being paid off, or you are stupid hack. Which is it? I vote for stupid hack.
When they coming out with the iBone???
overpriced keyboardless netbook,
The iPad is *NOT* a "netbook".
And not like any "netbook" ever made.
Overprices? Everyone was guess it would be around $1000. At $499 (soon to be $399)... I'm not sure how that is "overpriced".
no one seems to have noticed that
the shipping date had slipped
The shipping date was *NEVER* announced until recently... and always has been April 3, 2010.
Where is that "slipped"?
This article seems to be taking a lot of heat, but spoke nothing but the truth. Subtract the Nazi statements mind you since the iPad is essentially just a bad netbook and not, well, committing genocide.
I've always been a fan of Apple but people need to be able to understand the difference between a good product that we can all use to make our lives easier and over-hyped garbage that will only tie us down with more gadgets to carry/another monthly bill.
All for what exactly? Our iPhones can all do what this device does and more.
So thank you to the writer, thank you for clearly pointing out most of the iPads shortcomings and not jumping on the same media bandwagon as all the others in order to hype up a product that clearly doesn't deserve the hype.
To all those planning to wait in line for one of these (as Apple dictates you to do) well, don't say we didn't warn ya.
You need to mark your column "short-sided opinions".
Look, if you hate Apple, don't buy their products. However if you aren't intellegent enough to understand the huge market that will fit into the iPad, perhaps you shouldn't write tech atricles.
Personally, the iPad would be a waste of money because I am a Web developer. However, most American's use their personal computers primarily for Internet and E-mail. These are the folks who will be buying this in droves.
When Apple stock hits 300/share by next Feb. perhaps you'll understand how the marketplace works.
"if you buy this low-powered, overpriced Ipod Touch you sacrifice any credibility you might have as someone who knows technology"
Luckily, you won't need a technologist to help figure out how to make an iPad work. You won't need one to install new software. Most importantly, you won't need one to tell you how you screwed up the whole system, because you won't be able to do that no matter what you do.
After reading this article I have only one question:
Where does the author get his pot supply?
thelonederanger.com
here's another one of those apple doomsayers, say it everyday and you'll be correct some time...gonna be a long wait buddy
Journalism is all about reporting news objectively, and then derives an analysis of the impact or the reasons for this news.
You are obviously not a journalist, just an Apple hater.
And btw no one needs to "know" technology to write emails, read books, play games or what ever, it such a waste of time, and it certainly does not make you credible ...
This blog brought to you by Microsoft.
You're a professional writer. You should learn how to use the word "ironically" correctly. There's no irony in the situation you described.
Looks like you pissed in the apple fan-twinks cheerios. made em so mad they might try to come after ya. You hurt their feelings! Dont worry about them, every plastic toy I ever got for Christmas was overpriced and underpowered too!
"Predictable" is why I don't read or quote or link to the Inquirer.
"Sophomoric" is why it's predictable. High school - not college.
This is the worst article I have ever laid my eyes on. You are quite an embarrassment to writers.
Hey man!
Can you please tell me who do I have to contact to become a blogger on this site?
I assume I will get paid hefty checks from M$, Adobe or Google for trashing the competition; or at least I will get some freebies ;)
Writing non-sense looks pretty easy :)
I can do it too!
Its great to see someone in the media who actually sees apple for what they are. POS products that are overpriced and years behind similar products that only do well because of pop culture idiocy.
They thought the same about the iphone. How can you say it's the equivalent of a notebook. Do some research. It's what journalists are supposed to do.
Which notebook is using the new chipset that was created specifically for this mobile platform? Netbooks need virus protection. Does the Ipad have additional costs associated with it's usage.
You article comes across uninformed. I will chalk it up to the late night you had watching the Oscars instead of doing research about the product and the technology.
I am unsubscribing from Google News. I found this drivel about the iPad from a typical Windows fanboy through their feed. To call anything from this site news is a travesty. This is just typical, blind, stupid Apple hatred. No news here. Just an editorial about something somebody else said. Nothing to see here. Time to move along.
"Apple advertised the Ipad in a commercial break, ironically just after an Inglorious Basterds actor collected an award for being a jolly good Nazi".
One of the all-time classic Inquirer sentences!
Great article! It is strange that the "magical", over priced, low resolution, cameraless, keyboardless iPad netbook that cannot multitask, use flash or run any application that is not Apple approved would have its launch delayed by the updated iPhone OS.
Did you hear that the iPad will NOT tether to the iPhone? Combine that with the iPad's micro simm slot, iPad owners will need to purchase a second, separate ATT subscription to use both devices.
Owning an iPad just got even more expensive.
ATT 1 - iPad owners 0
iPhone, iPad... not Iphone or Ipad
Nick Fartell: I totally hear ya, totally.
Now put that violin away and do something else .. maybe take a survey course in journalism 101, or maybe get a life?!
And this guy still has a job, seriously?
I mean Jobs could only have gone to the Oscars Ceremony to hype the iPad - he not going to win anything now is he...... Oh, wait a minute, there's that other company he runs..... What's it called again???? Yeah, Pixar......
Pathetic reporting, if that's all you can write as a tech reporter change your job and get a real life! What we readers expect from your profession is not some spreading of your personal feelings but some good impartial information.
Although I basically agree with you, Nick (that Apple deserves nothing but hate, that is), one great man from my country said "Let's not talk about them, just watch and move over" ("Non ragioniam di loro, ma guarda e passa" - Dante - Inferno [Hell])
Everybody look, I hate Apple and Steve Jobs AND I have a job in The Inquirer!!!
I landed on your page after being directed by Google News... Anyways... I have to ask you if you are really a professional... Let's put aside the fact that I am a mac fan and look at facts seriously...
- You complain on a 2 week delay for a product launch and roll out of this magnitude? Please share with me right away the column you wrote for Apple's competition launches...
- You dare assimilate Apple to Nazis? Do I read correctly?
- Underpowered, overprice... Please let people judge! Did you have an Ipad in hand? Have you used it?
I cannot believe you are a serious writer due to the lack of facts supporting your very short piece (talking about the article here...) I am looking forward to reading your articles after April 3...
"Over priced?" That's up to the market to decide.
"Low power?" That's a good thing. The lower the power requirement the longer the battery charge lasts.
As Dr. House would say, "He's an Idiot!"
Smack talk from a disposable electronic circular that completely lacks any credibility - of course spam-infested Google News booted up your link. Happy that my ad blocker cost you money.
Small "i", majscule "p": iPad, iPhone.
There, that wasn't so hard, was it?
Good gracious, Nick, "over-priced" and "underpowered."
You receiving your lobbying checks, on time, from Google and MS?
Dropping the snarky for a moment, the materiality of both of those (uninformed) slurs depends on the perspectives of buyers, their comparison levels, and the utilities they perceive in, on the surface, a rather elegant product. Having just survived three days with a guest PC and dirty and broken windows, I'm not terribly impressed with either your logic or reporting.
Chuckle, do I detect some serious iPad-envy, or are you normally a critic who can't be bothered with real performance. I'll get back to you with 'facts' after my 3G version arrives...(-:
this is trash... no substance here.
Just like your column is news, what a waste of space
