AMD HAS UNVEILED its first 8-series chipset with the launch of the 890GX, which forms the basis for is desktop based 2010 Vision technology.
The 890GX chipset integrates HD4290 graphics, but can also support dual discrete graphics cards in a Crossfire configuration.
The new chipset is designed to be compatible with the upcoming Phenom II X6 six-core processors and aimed predominately at budget minded consumers with relatively simple computing requirements such as a home theatre PC or entry level workstation.
The 890GX Chipset supports SATA 3.0 6Gbps and SuperSpeed USB 3.0, as well as Gigabit Ethernet, HyperTransport 3.0 and second generation PCI Express, although which of these features are utilised will be up to the individual motherboard manufacturers.
AMD also reckons that the integrated HD4290 graphics can handle 1080p Blu-ray playback including dual-stream Picture in Picture as well as other HD content in MPEG2, VC-1, and H.264 formats.
Chimpzilla also announced that it is expanding its Fusion Partner Program to include its commercial channel and software partners.
Under the new structure partners will be placed into one of three business tracks, either system distributors, commercial volume resellers or commercial solution providers, and will also be placed in one of three tiers: Elite, Premier or Select.
Partners include the likes of Microsoft, Adobe, Sony, Gas Powered Games and Nero. µ

is that sometimes the most expensive chip is the best "bang for buck." Take the 12-core AMD chip that is being made. That chip is damn expensive. But, in my case, I am very interested in distributed computing, which means my cpus tend to operate at 100% pretty much all the time. When you consider the maximum possible crunching potential of chips, rather than, say, how much it's going to cost to put your home movies on DVD and play the latest games, the result can be very different.
Not really sure if anyone cares about this little aspect of the market, but for the people saying,"Wtf am I going to do with a quad-core when my dual-core is barely stressed most of the time?" these companies are going where the money is, and even if it seems silly now, at some point these chips will be powerful to start a new technological paradigm. It might even be something no ones even thought of yet. I mean, I don't know of anyone who saw the Internet coming when it was only a few thousand nodes.
