NORDIC FIRMS Skype and Nokia have announced the release of Skype software for the Symbian smartphone OS.
Skype for Symbian is available for download now, and the firms have said that it will let users use the chat and messaging platform on the move, through WiFi or various modes of mobile data connections.
The features of Skype for Symbian include the usual suspects, free Skype to Skype calls, instant messaging and presence availability. The firms were pleased to be bringing it into the hands of Nokia users, not least because there are so many of them.
Russ Shaw, general manager for mobile at Skype said, "With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype's relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer."
Initially Skype for Symbian will work on smartphones using Symbian 1, but Skype added that it would soon release a version of the application aimed at other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.
Skype for Symbian is available now through Nokia's Ovi app store. "Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We're seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users," added Jo Harlow, senior vice president for smartphones at Nokia.
An up to date list of supported handsets is available through the Symbian web site. µ
If its the same app which have been out for some time then it's absolutely useless (at least to me). How can they justify not allowing Skype to make calls over Wi-Fi? The only way to do it is to use your data connection using your allowed data allowance - as I said - useless.
Well for those that remembered they were using a Nokia and not a tied, bound and hog-tied iPhone, it's been available directly from the Skype website for quite a while.
