Intel demos 48 core possibilities

Video Rendering farm on a chip

INTEL HELD AN EVENT in London last night to talk up its Core i3, i5 and i7 processors.

To highlight the ceaseless march of technology and Chipzilla's own adherence to its beloved Moore's Law, the company was showcasing technology from the last 20 years as well as having a few demos about things we may expect to see in the future.

Among these was this demonstration about the sorts of applications, such as advanced 3D rendering, that become feasible when a single processor can have 48 or more cores. µ

48 cores - uses can be found

I can see that Larabee for graphics might not perform against specialized GPU (where they just add more of what they already developed)

But for web farms (those cloud things) or rendering or scientific or game servers - but all those are specialized.

The main difficulty will be that consumer software is designed for only a few cores, if even that. Programmers still have most of the learning curve in front of them and the tools likewise need to be developed let alone matured.

It will take a while to get this new paradigm mainstreeam, but it will be the future.

Bum...bum-bum-bum-BUM

Intel TV chime or 'bong' ranked #1 most addictive sound by @ABC news.

I like this sound.

For my previous comment :

It is a no brainer if AMD is going into oblivion. Because like Intel Insiders claim : Your rockstars are not like Our Rock Stars. AMD does not have a rockstar like Intel.

Good, Intel's innovation leap can not be reached by any party in the semiconductor industry.

I hope that Intel will implant chip to everyone. So, Intel can control what people will think. This is a great innovation to make people samrter.

I like this claim :

We are the people of Intel®. And we are the Sponsors of Tomorrow.™

It is not a brainer claim if AMD is going into oblivion.

Nice try, but...

For the time intel launches 48-core processors, GPUs (or APUs) will be powerful enough to handle ALL of your every day apps. This is just intel trying to justify Larrabee's existence. ;)

'cloud' lol

Intel's 48-core 'cloud computing' chip is more proof that marketing speak sells. Everything will be 'cloud' for a while, just like the 'nano' trend and the iName trend. people aren't sure what 'cloud' really means, so it must be sophisticated!

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
