Alex Burmaster, communications director at Nielsen's online division, has blogged about a similar trend seen in the popular social notworking tools in the UK, including the fact that some 7 per cent of Twitter users spend a massive and somewhat concerning 6 hours and 17 minutes on Twitter each month. Either they are slow readers, or perhaps they have fallen asleep, we don't know. But what is certain is that this minority accounts for almost 80 per cent of the time spent on the site by all users.
Nielsen has broken users of social timewasting sites down into three groups: 'light' visitors - those spending no more than five minutes on the site during the month; 'medium' visitors - those spending between five minutes and 60 minutes; and 'heavy' visitors - those spending more than 60 minutes a month.
Twitter is not alone in having glue-like features. Facebook too had similar results. Fully 26 per cent of Facebook's visitors are classified as 'heavy' users, according to the stats, and account for 88 per cent of total time spent on the site, while three per cent of MySpace's visitors account for 63 per cent of total time spent on the site and 14 per cent of Bebo's visitors account for 87 per cent of its total time.

It would be interesting to see what the percentage of businesses using twiiter are doing so as a business development tool or just employees using twitter as a "time waster".
We personally use twitter to spread the word about our industry tips, advice and share other great resources to our followers. We rarely post personal drival.
We have actually drive a lot of traffic to our web site via our twitter account. If you use it properly you can make offers and convert these followers into sales leads. I wonder if you find sales leads to be a waste of time?
Twitter is a regular tool we use so yes, business development is our hobby!
