SOFTWARE FLOGGER Microsoft has finally managed to overtake Google, albeit only in a brand recognition survey.
The annual survey lists 500 of the top business brands in the UK and those sampled put Microsoft ahead of its search rival Google. For Google, which was at the top of the pile in 2009, the fall from its perch to fifth place wasn't nearly as large as that of the Royal Bank of Scotland, which fell out of the top 500 altogether.
The top 10 consists of three technology firms, one less than in 2009. Nokia and Sony have been replaced by Blackberry, whick rucked up in third place. Technology firms traditionally do well in these surveys, primarily due to their products' ubiquitous natures. You're much more likely to use a Microsoft or Google product than say, Virgin Atlantic, which landed in between Blackberry and Google on the survey results.
These surveys try to discover what brands have mindshare in particular areas of society and gauge the effectiveness of their respective marketing departments. It comes as a bit of surprise, perhaps, that Apple hasn't broken into the premier league. As this survey sampled business people, it would seem that they haven’t bought into the cappuccino firm's image just yet.
For Microsoft its top spot in the Superbrands survey will be a small feather in its oversized cap, but surely it would have much preferred to have overtaken Google in the lucrative search market, which it has not. µ
remember, a brand can be remembered for being crap as well as for being good
as this poll does not distinguish between the two, i think in this case it is the former
