Poker domain is big earner
DOMAIN NAME BROKER Sedo announced that it has overseen the sale of the poker.org domain for a pot of $1 million.
It might not be the most expensive domain ever. Around this time last year Toysrus spent five times as much on toys.com, while in the past business.com shifted for $7.5 million and sex.com brought down a whopping $15 million - never mind the fact that it has actually been stolen on occasion - but this is a significant price for the relatively new domain.
"Poker.org is an integral part of our growth strategy, and will provide great dividends now and into the future," said PokerCompany.com, which presumably already owns pokercompany.org.
Other .org sales have been small beer in comparison. Sedo said that the next biggest earners on its books had been engineering.org, which sold for $198,000, sexe.org, which went for $151,400 and date.org for $151,000. Note to anyone at work, do not look up sexe.org.
"We expect to see growing demand for .org domains, as organisations and individual investors are recognising their full value and potential," said Kathy Nielsen, director of sales at Sedo. We reckon it has more to do with making sure that no other company recognises the full value and potential of an applicable name, but that might just be us.
Sedo is offering a handful of other premium domains as well, including chocolate, fun and senior citizens, three words you seldom see together outside of daytime television shows.
The .org top level domain is now the third largest generic domain, after .com and .net, Sedo said, with eight million registered names. µ
