SOCIAL NOTWORKING SERVICES Facebook and Google Buzz are being hauled up before the beak by privacy critics.
Facebook has been haled into court over changes that the social networking site made to its privacy settings last November and December. The lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, claims that the modifications have in reality reduced privacy protection, that is, that information that was private became public.
The plaintiffs said that Facebook's messaging around the changes was "misleading, confusing and disingenuous," and the lawsuit demands loads of cash from the company in damages.
The lawsuit was filed by five Facebook users on behalf of all Facebook users, and alleged that the company's modifications have only resulted in more personal data being pushed out to the Internet while making privacy options even harder to exercise.
Meanwhile Google is facing similar problems over its Buzz social notworking service. The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission about Google's Buzz just days after Google made changes to the service in order to address mounting privacy concerns.
Over the weekend, Google had altered Buzz to let Gmail users more easily disable the service and to merely suggest contacts for its users' social networks. But EPIC said privacy violations remain because Google automatically signs up Gmail users for Buzz, rather than waiting for them to do so themselves, or "opt in" for the service. µ
I don't understand why they are complaining.
First, the you don't own the site. If you want to keep something secret why post it.
Second, they seems to be too paranoid. Why? Have they done something wrong?
Of course we in Australia have no concerns about social Notworking privacy.
"FROM today a person's full name and street address must run next to all electoral matter posted on Facebook, Twitter and blogging sites."
"Mr Taylor said an appropriate place to include authorisation on a website would be on a footer, or on a Facebook page, (or) in the box where you can write something about yourself."

You just don't get any!
I like the social NOTWORKING term. It fits purrrfectly to me. Why would I want to profile my personal or private information into the cloud (internet) in the first place ? because I'm STOOPID ? NOT ME ! But memberships numbers shows many others are.
Are you that starved for attention ?
Don't post personal or private info onro the net like an idiot or you get what you deserve!
I love the INQ and it's silly terms/misspellings

(1) I think it's funny when uptight people post about the wordplay on the Inq. It's a pun. Think about it... It's also funny when my fellow Americans complain about the British phrases on this British web site. Oh, I recently saw a British movie, knowing what 'pants' means was handy.
(2) Facebook is a FOR PROFIT business. Users don't pay a dime to use it. So, (big realization people!) they get cash from advertizing and from letting the world plus dog see a bit of your info.
Do you really think one person would miss the word "networking" 3 times in the same article plus in another related article "Google unveils social notworking site"? How about understanding how The Inquirer works? Start by reading the JDocs comment...
"Social notworking" ?!?
proof-reading text before publishing online is not a bad idea, think about it.
Welcome The Inq!
Out where in the tech world we have our own language.
Social Notworking = Social Networking
Vole = Microsoft
Chipzilla = Intel
Chimpzilla = AMD
You get the idea...
Social Notworking? Haled into court? Are you kidding me?
