Microsoft unveils Windows Phone Series 7 OS

MWC 2010 Zune media and Xbox Live games
Mon Feb 15 2010, 17:20

AS EXPECTED, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took to the stage at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today to launch the Windows Mobile 7 OS.

Sorry, that should be Windows Phone Series 7 now that the company has moved away from the Windows Mobile moniker.

After a brief introduction by Ballmer, Joe Belfiore, vice president of Windows Phone stood up to show off the Vole's new mobile operating system.

Abandoning it's more traditional interface, Microsoft's new phone operating system borrows heavily from that of the Zune, with a little bit of Xbox Live thrown in for good measure. Everything is about hubs and flows and a more consistent experience.

It also takes a page out of the Android playbook, with a more customisable home page and three dedicated hardware buttons. The first is 'Start', which provides access to the live panels or tiles and applications, and the second and third are 'Search' and 'Back', respectively, which are pretty self explanatory.

The live panels are effectively widgets, so they can be updated with web based information in real time, for instance updating contact images from social networks and other sources or displaying calendar, weather or playlists information.

It also has inbuilt support for multi-touch control, which is supposed to be consistent with the multi-touch support in the company's Windows 7 OS for PCs.

According to Belfiore, the primary focus of the Windows Phone 7 OS is "aggregating discrete sources of data into a centralised repository that's fun and easy to use."

As a result, the OS includes six hubs, each of which pulls together content and services based on a particular theme.

The the first four hubs are: People, which combines contact and status information from the address book, social networks and server locations like Microsoft Exchange; Pictures, which grabs photos on the phone, those synced with a PC and web services like Flickr or Live Gallery; Games, which combines locally stored mobile games with Xbox Live details including your avatar; and Music + Video, which is a direct port of the software that drives the Vole's Zune media player and has a PC linked content library and online music including streaming services.

Not entirely forsaking its work ethic, or rather its PC applications cash cow, Microsoft has dubbed the fifth hub Office, which brings together access to the Vole's standard Microsoft Office suite as well as Onenote, Sharepoint and Outlook. Somehow it apparently seems to think that people are going to want to work with those fully-fledged PC applications, beyond just email and text messaging, on their relatively small phone screens.

Last is the Marketplace hub that taps into Microsoft's app store, which so far has failed to impress.

Sounding something like a child who didn't get a piece of cake when everyone else at the party did, Microsoft reckons that, while apps are great and all, we spend too much of our time having to switch between them. Instead the Vole reckons what we want is a "better experience", which it apparently interprets as access to just a handful of tightly integrated services.

Having released Windows Phone 6.5 only a few months ago, Ballmer reckons that the company won't be replacing that just yet, but instead there will be a period of overlap between Microsoft's two mobile operating systems.

According to Ballmer, Microsoft is "taking greater accountability" with its partners to try to make Windows on the phone not quite the abysmal experience that has caused users to flee in droves in recent months. As a result it's working more closely with hardware manufacturers, developers and operators to try and make Windows Phone 7 a popular choice when the first devices tip up around the middle of the year. µ

I do not need those freaking WinMos on my cell

which are just waste of time and money on all that POS.

I need fully working Win XP (or Windows 7) compatible OS on whatever mobile processor which will support it. Like XPPhone, the one small chinese company was able to make but all other big, sorry, ***retards*** couldn't.

Yes, retards, what else proof is needed?

Not surprising why Apple so easily made and continuing making ALL of them

Missed the boat

While the phone looks nice it does not have any features that are going to make users switch and if you were going to buy an IPhone or Android nothing here is going to change your mind. In trying to compete with Apple Microsoft is missing the boat they should be targeting Blackberry and the enterprise market leveraging Office.

Where?

Could someone link me to where it says there is no multitasking, flash or an open app market/community?

Thanks

@Jimbo

Len doesn't say he uses an iPhone! Now that the world's most popular mobile OS is open sourced and android is on the market too, I see little attraction in either the iPhone or WinMo. But then I don't really like smart phones, so probably wasn't a target market anyway - S60 is just fine for my needs.

@Len (MaxiPad) Hawking

So you don't approve of a product from a company that:

A. Sells its products on a closed platform
B. Forces customers to purchase apps from only the company store
C. Lacks multitasking & Flash

Then why the Hell are you using an Iphone? You need to get your head out of Steve "the son of Satan" Jobs's arse long enough to realize the irony of your rant.

BTW, thanks for the funny and enjoy the Kool-Aid! You've made my day!

Just as about to start 32 Page Article on Male Enhancement, here Comes Adobe with Great news:

Adobe: Flash 10.1 for Smart Phones Out by Midyear
Monday, 15 Feb 2010 10:51 AM

Adobe says it is still on track to launch the latest version of its Flash Player for smart phones in the first half of the year.

Adobe Systems Inc. was planning to demonstrate Flash 10.1 at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, this week.

Flash is used to play Web videos and games. Mobile systems that will work with the full Flash Player include the BlackBerry, Google's Android, Palm's WebOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian, used on Nokia's smart phones.

The San Jose, Calif. company says Flash 10.1 will also work on many tablet-style computers.

But Apple's iPad and iPhone are still off the list.
uessing Flash isn't that new there or Is It? Anyway, Anystep to interoperability is Helpful, although Mobi apps, well....back to Male Enhancement. As Flash & MP3 seeem bit of Long hope,Till html 5.0, just don't own one, in fact NO Mobi app ?does flash, from recent readings.

pitty

Im all up for the new UI, makes sence to me, looks great, an gives the other two a run for their money, and its nice to see the company thats been propping up the mobile market for years finally refresh its ideas and move on with the times.

what is going to nail this for me however is the corperate side, WM is the single most used mobile OS there is out there on the PDA market, the reason for this is because it is essentially a desktop OS on a pda letting you do pretty much what ever you like, removing that market is a bad idea, folk will stick with older devices an upgrade less. Such a pitty, i had high expectations for this and it meets most of them, just not the critical ones for business use.

WinMo is Doomed

Who likes the fact that this platform will be closed, and all apps will need to be approved by Microsoft, and can only be installed via Microsoft's app store?

No? Don't like that?

How 'bout the lack of multitasking and Flash? Sound good? Nope.

The user interface is Zune-like, but like Zune, the Windows Phone 7 will fail in the market for the same reasons.

Late. Copy-cat product. Savvy competitors.

WinPhone7 iphone!

@Fitz

I really hope Live and WHS make it in, at least as an update. The apple fanboys can whine all they want, Win Phone 7 looks great. I love the Zune HD over the iplods and I think the Zune interface is a step in the right direction. Also, with access to exchange, this is a must for me for work. Can't wait to get one of these bad boys! Finally, a worthy alternative to iflop phones!

title

I watched the press conference, and some of the demos did look very good.

I wonder if and how WinMo7 will integrate with Windows Home Server and Games For Windows Live?
