GRAPHICS CHIP DESIGNER Nvidia is insisting that more than 50 Optimus enabled notebooks will be available in mid-2010.
We assume that it means 50 models and not just 50.
Asustek Computer is expected to launch a series of notebook models, including the UL50Vf, N61Jv, N71Jv, N82Jv and U30Jc, supporting the technology, so that will suck up a few of Nvidia's final total.
Optimus technology enables notebooks equipped with an Nvidia discrete GPU alongside an integrated GPU to automatically switch between the two for a given application. It is supposed to ensure the the system is making the best use of available hardware resources to provide optimum performance and battery life.
The Green Goblin is pitching it as an improvement over existing dual-GPU setups that require the user to manually select which GPU is active.
Nvidia claims that notebooks with Optimus could see battery-life extended by up to 2 hours. It said that "just as a Hybrid car chooses the most appropriate engine between the gas-powered and electric engine on-the-fly, Nvidia Optimus does the same thing for graphics processors in notebook computers."
We hope that does not also mean that you end up with your gas pedal getting stuck, crashing into a wall and facing a product recall.
Optimus technology supports Windows 7, Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 (Arrandale), Atom N450 and N470, and Core 2 Duo (Penryn) processors, along with Nvidia's GeForce 200M and 300M-series GPUs and its Ion 2 chipset. µ
@maddoctor: please go play Solitaire instead of wasting everyone's time with your nonsense comments. Oops, guilty!
if Intel Larrabee has powered many Intel based notebooks, I believe the bugs will be gone, or it will only have minor bugs that can be fixed easily.
It's a fantastic feature, when the discrete GPU craps out (and it will), you can still use your nvidia-infected Laptop, with the Intel IGP, of course :D
I do know I will never be the first to buy anything Nvidia anymore. To me they have a lot to prove and to keep lying only makes it worse. At one time they would a good company, now they have to depend on people unaware of there problems to buy there products.
And you can only rename the same chip so many times.
