Asian notebook makers expect to overtake HP

Trouncing the West
Fri Feb 12 2010, 11:10

IT IS STARTING to look like Western notebook makers are fast becoming unable to hold their ground against the Far East.

According to DigiTimes, notebook shipments from the top two makers, Quanta and Compal, are expected to reach 50 million and 46-48 million units this year, respectively.

These volumes will knock the spots off shipments by the maker of very expensive printer ink HP, which can only manage 45 million units, along with Acer's 40 million units.

The figures are important because strong shipments mean that outfits can reduce their upstream material costs. Vendors may consider transferring purchasing control to the makers to reduce costs, which would in turn help boost the makers' profits.

While Digitimes does not reveal where it got its figures from, they are not surprising. Far Eastern manufacturers have been bragging for some time that they are starting to undercut Western makers of gear.

Although Westerners have been getting their hardware made in the Far East for some time, they have been unable to make the same margins as their more tightly integrated and nimble Asian rivals. µ

Tut!

Oh come on! The ignorance shown in this report reflects really badly on the writer and the editorial control of The Inquirer. Come back Mike M, all is forgiven!

Sad the Inq has fallen to this level

This is the worst article for not writing about something that the author simply knows nothing about. If I was the Inq editor I would pull it now!

HP, Acer, Apple, Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell do not make notebooks, they brand them.

Panasonic may be the only one to do their own thing, but even they may use ODMs

I cannot believe that the Inq has dropped to such an uninformed level of reporting, very sad indeed.

Ignorant

Those two Taiwan-based vendors are manufacturing for every other OEM on this planet. They do not sell directly to end-customers.

The whole article is based on lack of basic understanding as to how the notebook market is working.

Ignorant premise and title

Not only do they are two of 3 companies in China that manufacture notebooks for HP and Dell, but EVERY OTHER company including Apple, Toshiba et al.

Just not an informed article at all.

Notebook makers?

I wish this article could have gone into a little more detail. Quanta and Compal manufacture all of HP and Dell notebooks. How is it that "they ship more than HP?"

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
