STORAGE OUTFIT Seagate is shipping its 2.5-inch Savvio 10k.4 hard drive to enteprises.
Today the firm said that its Savvio 10k.4 drive is the world's highest-capacity and most reliable 2.5-inch hard drive presently available to enterprise buyers. These claims, Seagate explained, stem from the drive's capacity of 600GB - double that of the competition - and its 'unprecedented' 2 million hours Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) reliability rating.
Seagate added that that drive is designed specifically for enterprise users, is self-encrypting, and has power and performance tweaking options. One optional feature can be invoked to detect the corruption of data 'in flight' between the host system and the drive, while overall the drive has been designed to reduce end user cooling and energy consumption requirements.
Howard Shoobe, senior manager, Dell Storage Product Management, gave his backing to the release, saying, "Our customers face challenging storage needs requiring the most efficient use of space and power while maintaining the highest performance possible. The new 2.5-inch 10K-RPM 600GB capacity point allows a doubling of capacity within the same rack space of current 3.5-inch 15K 600GB drives while increasing overall system-level performance and decreasing power usage."
The Savvio 10k.4 hard drive is available now. We are checking UK prices and will update this as soon as possible. µ
2.5" drives are used in enterprise drives, as smaller platters reduce the seek time. It has been like this for years.
The fact that someone is slinging 1TB drives in the 2.5" (but 11mm high) form factor is completely irrelevant.
I thought 2.5-inch was the size they use in laptops. Also, I heard that someone is slinging 1TB drives at this size.
Seagate are absolutely terrible. Two 500gb ENTEPRISE drives I got for christmas last year just made it to july before failing. All they did was store media content and they had a 50gb partition for active torrents. Seagate, more like Sh*t*gate
I wonder if it as anywhere as "reliable" as my 7200.10,.11, and .12 drives. So reliable they almost lasted 1/2 the warranty period. Go Seagate!
