FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has released shipping and availability information for the Booklet 3G it announced last year.
The Booklet 3G PC, which Nokia seems loathe to call a netbook, costs more than an Ipad might and more than the Google Nexus One, when bought through Play.com, coming in at weighty £649.
The Booklet 3G comes with Windows 7 software (*shudder*) and offers up to 12 hours of battery life. It includes built-in GPS, backed with access to Nokia's Ovi maps, as well as a number of other mobility features.
Nokia describes it as a mini laptop, adding that it is under 2cm thick and thus ideally suited for carting around with you. Supporting this are its 10.1-inch HD-ready display plus WiFi and 3G connection options. Although it will not make phone calls it can be used to send and recieve SMS messages.
When we reviewed the Booklet 3G last year we were impressed with its style and commended it for its display, if not its ability to display media such as movies. Although we thought that the projected battery life of 12 hours was a lofty promise we did manage to get a few solid hours of use out of it.
"In our own tests under continuous use, with WiFi and the webcam enabled, at the highest brightness level on the most power hungry settings of Windows 7, the Booklet 3G lasted five hours and forty minutes. On the most power saving settings, with the screen at 40 per cent brightness, plus WiFi and the webcam disabled, this Nokia netbook lasted a stunning seven hours and thirty minutes", we said in December.
As a web browsing device we found it simple to set up and easy to use.
The Booklet is available through Nokia's own web store. Nokia said it is in stock and ready to ship. µ
people that buy this or the ipad are just buying the name or the gimmick. the actuall functionality you can get from a standard laptop far outweighs these! sure, you want something smaller you can carry around, evey manufacturer under the sun makes small laptops that are 10" across, panosonic made a touch screen one which has an optional keyboard years ago! and what on earth is new with this aside from its got a nokia sticker on it? prob straight out the asus factory!
... you can get the Alienware M11x, which is only 11" and has the horsepower to run most games at a high level of detail. Seems massively over-priced to me.
... I'll give it a miss. I can buy a proper notebook AND a netbook for that!

Why "shudder" at the thought of Windows 7?
I have just upgraded my VAIO from Vista and it is now much faster and far more user friendly! I have a few driver issues but nothing I wont solve in time and I blame Sony for that anyway. I love it!
Gonna wait a few more years before I buy a netbook.... technology has a little further to go!
