JAPANESE CONGLOMERATE Sony has a launched the BDP-S470 stand-alone 3D-ready Blu-ray player, just a day after Panasonic's slew of 3D Blu-ray player announcements.
The 3D in the cheap as chips $200 (£130) Sony Blu-ray player comes courtesy of a firmware upgrade that the company will roll out in the summer. This same firmware upgrade will also be available on its recently introduced BDP-S570 stand-alone Blu-ray player as well as the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 models.
In the US at least, the 3D BDP-S470 can stream movies, videos, music, and more from Netflix, Amazon Video On-Demand, Youtube Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora coming Spring 2010, NPR, Sony Pictures and Sony Music making up over 25 total providers through the Sony BRAVIA Internet video platform.
Sony hasn't announced a UK release date and when it does we expect to see the price shoot up but you can bet it's already in talks with similar content publishers for Blighty.
Sony regards itself as a front-runner in the 3D pack and is aggressively pushing 3D in the hope that consumer adoption will start to ramp up by the tail end of 2010. µ

how long has bluray been out now?
i dont see many of them in peoples homes. the majority of the buying public are obviously happy with dvd and divx and dont want to be told by a conglomerate when to bin all their home entertainment hardware and fork out loadsa money for new tat.
if sony didnt seize the opportunity to put massive prices on the new hardware and media then maybe things would be different. a newer technology is probably in development or testing by now.
i dont think theyll learn their lesson though. love is blind and sony loves money!
Does anyone really give a damn?
And with Sony's crazy inflated prices, no one will buy them. LOL
Keep your eye on Vizio for the best deals.
And they'll be adding it to PS3's as well via psn firmware update.
At least that's what they said....for 3d games AND 3d movies.
But I don't see it here. Guess it was just an oversight.
