Microsoft flings chairs at former VP
SOFTWARE MONOLITH Microsoft is fuming after a blog post penned by a former vice president claimed the outfit had lost its edge and is "failing" as a result.
Dick Brass, who was a vice president at Microsoft from 1997 to 2004, wrote in the New York Times that the Vole had become a clumsy, uncompetitive innovator. Its products are lampooned, often unfairly but sometimes with good reason.
Brass said the Vole has "inept" marketing and he compared the company to ailing car maker General Motors, saying its current profits are too dependent on Windows and Office, products that were developed many years ago.
Brass, who was involved in the ClearType project, said that the Vole had never developed a true system for innovation and its structure thwarted ideas getting anywhere. He said that a good idea like ClearType was slowed by the corporate culture and that competition between different teams often stifles innovation.
Microsoft defended its ability to produce innovative products. Frank Shaw, Microsoft's corporate vice president of communications said that the Vole was always coming up with ideas to save the world.
"For Microsoft, it is not sufficient to simply have a good idea, or a great idea, or even a cool idea. We measure our work by its broad impact," Shaw said.
Shaw added that Brass's comments about ClearType were not exactly true.
Dick generally focused on ClearType, noting that this technology was "stifled" by existing business groups.
"For the record, ClearType now ships with every copy of Windows we make, and is installed on around a billion PCs around the world. This is a great example of innovation with impact: innovation at scale," Shaw said.
Shaw admitted that you could argue that this should have happened faster. "But for a company whose products touch vast numbers of people, what matters is innovation at scale, not just innovation at speed."
So in otherwords speed is not really of the essence.

After 20 years at the top the best they can offer is some font enchancer. Uh oh.
MS is a giant hanging onto it's monopoly by providing just good enough products.
I cannot think of a single MS product that makes people think it's the best in the market. Can you?
I meant Cleartype needs a monitors native resolution to work, not Truetype. Like d said; truetype is a font format standard, it's cleartype which is the technology to improve the display of fonts on screen.
Truetype only works if you're using your monitors native display resolution. My monitor is a 1680 x 1050 panel, but my graphics card is not fast enough to drive it at that resolution while watching videos.
So I set my monitor to 1280 x 768, so for me Truetype makes things look worse. Only if I was using the 1680 x 1050 setting would Truetype make fonts look better.
It's cleartype, not truetype. truetype is a font format standard, not a font screen presentation method.
On xp, you need to run the cleartype tuner in order for cleartype to work well, initially, on a lcd monitor.
I never knew what truetype was until today. Turned it on for 5 minutes on windows xp. At first it was kind of cool but it started to give me a headache and I had to turn it off. Maybe it would be ok on an lcd television where your sitting 6-8 feet away from the screen and the blurriness doesn't hit you so strong.
ClearType is a font enhancer. Sure it may be pretty. And sure, it may improve the effectiveness of reading by a margin. But, this is a speckle of innovation inside a huge platform!

Just look into the history of OS/2. At the start, Bill himself proclaimed it the future of computing. Then the money types saw that it was TOO good, pretty much XP level features in 1993, though the hardware had yet to arrive. OS/2 had to be gotten rid of so that M$ could sell six or eight more versions of a mere GUI shell atop single-tasking DOS for another 7 years.
M$ types seem to think M$ invented everything. Once had a young IT guy ask me if OS/2 had DHCP -- yes, IBM was doing DHCP before you were born, sonny.
m$ innovative? Where do you see that? Even windows and office were ripoffs. and msdos was outright stolen by gates.
I like to try many os's as a hobby and to find the best for me. Microsoft is not innovative at all compared to Linux and OS X. Many things I have seen "NEW" in MS I have seen before.
And though they did make money off Vista, in my mind it is a complete failure.
I would call it the ms plague.
Windows 7 is a little better but still suffers hangs from copying big files and is extremely slow at copying when it doesn't crash. I have a usb hard with 110gb of files, it windows 7 over 2 hours to copy and Ubuntu can do it under an hour of the same machine.We have gotten so used to sluggish ms os's
we think it's normal. They are good at one thing however, making money because they are a monopoly.I really hope some day we have a choice of os's on every computer we buy.If you like MS you can still have it, if you don't want it you won't have to pay for it. I live in the U.S. but I am surprised the EU has not done more about the ms monopoly.
Bill Gates did not do anything wrong. He is a usual capital broker, didn't want to do which doesn't make sense.
