Readers' Ipad poll results are in

Get'em while they're hot

THE INQUIRER'S POLL RESULTS you've all been waiting for without even realising it are finally in.

We asked you dear readers if you thought Apple's Ipad would be a success and you replied to our multiple choice answers.

Given that the Inquirer's Ipad coverage and your comment feedback have already oscillated between damnation by faint praise and unhinged hatred we were kind of expecting a couple of the results but were genuinely surprised by some of the others.

Taking a surprising leap to the top slot for us with a huge 32 per cent of the vote is, "No, it won't be as good as rival tablets from other vendors." We understand that Apple naysayers and dyed in the wool PC aficionados are only too aware that Windows based tablets will hopefully tend to favour substance over style. They'll offer a wider and higher array of specifications and features and, on paper at least, will trump the Ipad in every respect. They will also look absolutely cr*p and none of the cool kids will want one.

"No, tablets will tank completely" gets a large slice of the pie with 27 per cent of the vote, a surprising result for us. We thought this would come in first place, since 'tablet' is still a dirty word despite its makeover from a pen-input based business solution to a multimedia viewing and multi-touch consumer platform.

Moving to mid-table with 20 per cent of the overall vote is, "Yes, Steve Jobs is a genius and could flog dog poo as a snack". That one I would personally like to see. It would mean he would have to recolour said dog poo accordingly to Apple's in-house mono-livery and when was the last time anyone saw white dog poo? Jobs would be hailed as a genius for his supreme marketing acumen and would be said responsible for re-inventing dog poo. Books would be written and children would be born bearing his name on council estates.

And finally, languishing at the bottom of the results were, "What's an Ipad?" and, "Yes, it's a brilliant piece of kit and well worth the price?" with 8 per cent and 9 per cent of the vote, respectively. You jokers you. µ

Know what jobs knows

True apple fans will just stare at the no-flash icon for 5 to 30 minutes and simply imagine they saw a video, then make annoying comments about its (imaginary) content.
So really there is no need for flash you see.

iPoo

Looking forward to the iPoo. If Steve can get people to buy that he truly is a genius.
Seriously, I don't see any other options. This Chinese P88 touch screen computer supposedly for $200 US would be something I would be interested, but it's not coming anywhere soon.
Who in their right mind wold prefer monochrome over color?
I've seen other comparable systems and they're either way over priced or too bulky/heavy.
We've all seen the tech show photos, but I've been waiting since the fall and release dates have come and gone. Anyone have any recommendations that will actually be released?

Flogging dog poo

If he could Flog dog poo I guess Steve would be nicknamed "Big" Jobs.

Handbrake is a free and mutithreaded video encoder, it's what i use and is very good for ipod/iphone stuff. Just look at the number of stories on here that are about html 5, h264 and the future of streaming video over the internet. It's all going hd and non flash. So do as I suggest, encode your video in h264 to enjoy your movies on the iPad and then use the youTube app on ipad or use the html 5 page youtube released, netflix etc will do the same.

IPAD= Newton

Fail and bail all you fan boys. High price....Looks just like an IPHONE(Apple running out of steam?) Copied the CPU from Nvidia. Lied about making it themselves. Too much for too little Just like ALL THE OTHER APPLE PROUDCTS....Maybe the IPAD will make people open their eyes and find out HOW MUCH LITTLE THEY GET FOR SO MUCH MONEY. Its like buying a Forday Mustand 4 banger and slapping a Apple sticker on it..the price for the car automatically goes up $2,500 and you still have to buy the head lights, tires and the steering wheel as a added, separate price.

White dog sh#t

So the author has not seen white dog poo? Just leave it in the sun for 3 days and the dog sh#t turns white and the smell goes away - much like an Apple fanboy.

Just to point out the bleedin obvious

but the iPhone DOES ship with a YouTube application that allows you to watch streaming video. There's nothing to prevent a third party (like Hulu, Netflix etc.) writing their own player application for the iPad, no flash player required.

@tagg

To even entertain the notion that reencoding videos is the way to enjoy *streaming* video off the internet goes beyond the realm of naive, to that of *idiotic.* This is like making your own pod-casts from recordings of the radio. Who does that?

And do you even know anything about reencoding videos? Do you know how long it takes? Even encoding mp3 files takes time. In a get-up-and-go world, what person is going to sit by and wait for the encoder to complete the encode to copy over? That's only if the source video is readily available.

The fact of the matter is that this Newton 2.0 is dead(er) in the water if it doesn't support streaming videos off the internet from well known sources such as Youtube. Adobe could very well force Apple to capitulate on all fronts by partnering with Google to keep Youtube Flash-exclusive. No amount of Apple TV, or whatever hokey replacements Apple may try to create, will ever be able to compensate.

@taggs

Yes but how much does the video encoder app cost? Any Video Convertor is free as is Bicycle...and on any other tablet I can have my email open while watching that video...on the ipad not so much. It's a very expensive pieve of crippleware.

@todd

Congrats tod for being the only person on the internet to never hear of a video encoder! Reality check man, just encode your video to the format you want and then enjoy it on the iPad, same for music and last time I checked you don't pay apple for using the internet. No youTube? Todd you seiously haven't got a clue mate, go sit down in a dark room somewhere and stop commenting on things you know nothing about.

What does the Ipad do?

What can the Ipad do that what I already have can't do? If you have an iPod or a phone, you already have it's functionality covered.

Would I buy one?

It is nice and the price is not bad, but no I would not. Why? Well it is Apple. They want this thing so closed so pretty much any content you watch or listen to must be purchased of Their iStore. Now I know you can get downloads for iPod Touch that let you view Flash, but will they keep allowing "hacks" like this. Probably not. I do not want to have to pay Apple for every little thing I do on my computer.

I also thought it was a little big (20% narrower would be nicer) and the lack of replaceable battery sucks and the lack of a standard SD memory slot was just plain stupid... Now I get to pay "Apple Tax" on my memory too and $150 and 2 weeks time to replace the battery?

I know Flash is blocked, but what about Microsoft's Silverlight? If that goes then you can't watch Netflix... which is what Apple would like... just go to their iStore and get the move for 10x the cost. No Netflix, no Youtube, No Hulu... How is this the best internet experience ever?
