IM Flash announces 25nm NAND Flash chips

JOINT VENTURE PARTNERS Intel and Micron have created 25nm NAND Flash memory chips.

IM Flash has managed to stuff more on a chip every 18 months and in 2006 it started production with a 50nm process, then moved to a 40nm process in 2008.

Today the outfit officially announced 25nm NAND technology, which will be the smallest production ready semiconductor process technology.

Brian Shirley, vice president of Micron's memory group ,said that the production technology will provide significant benefits.

Tom Rampone, vice president and general manager of Chipzilla's NAND group added that the denser flash memory will speed the adoption of solid-state drive solutions for computing.

The shrink to 25nm reduces the die's size of the NAND Flash chips and hence the chip count within products can be reduced by up to half.

It allows for smaller, yet higher density designs at lower costs and Solid State Drives will feature larger maximum capacities while prices of current options will be driven further down.

Performance is about the same as 34nm products but there are a few advantages in going smaller. µ

Running Low on Nanos !??

How much longer can this keep happening?? Are they going to make sub 10nm flash chips. If so how?? If not then what technology will we be switching to next?? I can't bear to think that computers could stall out at the same speed for 50 years or more til they discover new physics.

Congrats...

You win the award for stating the farking obvious in a geeky tech mag.

Seriously, though, if I wanted a story like this, I'd go to the New York Times, or something.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
