Iphone gets VoIP over 3G

Goes Fring
Fri Jan 29 2010, 12:34

APPLE'S IPHONE will finally get Voice over IP (VoIP) service on 3G networks using a mobile application called Fring.

Fring lets users communicate over the Internet from their mobile devices. The announcement follows Apple's protracted argument with itself over whether to allow third party VoIP applications that run over 3G networks on its Iphone App Store.

Users with a Fring enabled Iphone will be able to make free voice and video calls over 3G or WiFi Internet access and use the proprietary Skype, Googletalk and MSN services as well as call friends on regular phone lines, either via the closed, fee-based Skype-Out or hundreds of other services based on the open standard session initiation protocol (SIP).

"Fring users and our team alike are very excited that Apple has allowed independent Iphone VoIP applications over 3G networks, letting users make voice and video calls over whichever Internet access suits their needs at any given place and time,” said Avi Shechter, cofounder and CEO of Fring.

Previously, VoIP Iphone apps like Fring and Truphone were only available over WiFi. There are already a raft of VoIP over 3G hacks online for unlocked or jail-broken Iphones, which make the Iphone think it is making calls over WiFi when actually it's using the phone's 3G data network.

With free VoIP 3G hacks online it’ll be interesting to see how many people will sign up with Fring, but it’s good news that at least there's a legitimate option. µ

Better late than never I guess...

"Users with a Fring enabled Iphone will be able to make free voice and video calls over 3G or WiFi Internet access"... Just like the rest of us have been able to do for several years...

Behold the wonders of a single source app store and everything being personally inspected by your own private Saint.

Although as others have mentioned, using voip via your 3G connection just doesn't make sense! Stick to WiFi connections.

@Dephcon

your "unlimited" 3G is very limited (read the fine print in contract). not sure which is more expensive - a minute of your voice plan or a MB of data, surely you can get free nights and weekends for voice calls. using "free" wifi is no-brainer, only what's the point of a cell phone limited to the range of wi-fi that you can have access to?

@Donna

VoIP over 3G would use your data, not minutes. So if you have unlimited data you'd be getting unlimited calls.

Why VOIP on 3G???

VOIP with 3G:
Slow. Uses up your minutes. Relies on AT&T. Clogs up an already overloaded network.

VOIP with wi-fi:
Fast. Never use your minutes. No AT&T needed at all. Ever.

Tell me again why people like VOIP-3G????
