OFFICE OVERLORD Microsoft has told the world plus dog what sort of gear they will have to go out and buy to run its sparkling rehashed Office 2010 when it hits the shops.
It looks like you should be okay if you can get Office 2007 to run, although the Vole is insisting that there should be a GPU on your machine.
Alex Dubec, a program manager on the Microsoft Office trustworthy computing performance team said Office 2010 should even be capable of running on netbooks. Writing in his blog, Debec admitted that nothing miffs punters more than having to buy new hardware every time the Vole puts out a new release of Office. Basically the last two times the Vole released retreads of Office it practically doubled the RAM and CPU requirements.
The minimum system requirements for Office 2010 include an Intel Pentium III 500MHz CPU, 256MB PC100 SDRAM and Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. In contrast, Office 2003 specified a 233MHz processor and 128MB of RAM.
You will also need a bit more space on your hard drive. Office 2010 takes up more disk space compared with Office 2007 and Office 2003, with the suite occupying an additional 1.0GB or 1.5GB. This is mostly because of the code requirements of 64-bit Office, the inclusion of Onenote, and some bloatware free trial versions of Office Professional 2010.
Perhaps the most annoying thing is the need for a GPU as Office 2010 assumes at minimum a Microsoft DirectX 9.0c-compliant graphics processors with 64MB of video memory. This is to run graphics in Excel and video integration features in PowerPoint.
Dubec said that computers with multicore processors will run Office 2010 even faster.
The 32-bit versions of Office 2010 will run on a variety of Microsoft 32-bit operating systems, including Windows 7, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Windows XP SP3, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 R2 with MSXML 6.0.
The 64-bit versions of Office 2010 will run on all 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008. They will not run on Windows Server 2003 R2 with MSXML 6.0 or Windows XP SP3. µ
Does it really matter, not to me it does not. I will just buy the new enterprise version on the HUP as I did with 2007 for less then 20 quid including postage.
Gnumeric is faster than Excel, audited for correctness by 3rd parties & it's free.

AbiWord is faster than MSWord, uses less RAM & it's free.

Am running beta on a Dell E4200 (1.2Ghz Intel ULV cpu + Intel integrated gfx). It works just fine. Some of the bells and whistles in the upgrade are very nice, although not sure I'd pay for them independently..
Are you just flipping retarded?
You boys must really be in the hardware toilet at the cheapass INQ. What are you running 486DX-16’s???. And, how in hell do you run anything WITHOUT a GPU??? Please give us a clue!
As usual, you’ve taken MS bashing to new heights of absurd frivolity. Then again, considering your hardware requirements, you’re definitely not MAXIMIUMPC.
I think it’s time to put up some more ads, spend some money, and upgrade.

I save my cash. I see some friends that give MS all those $$ and end up using only MS Word, LOL.
My reply to such lunacy, Open Office.
Crap, I only have PC66. Thanks for finally making me have to upgrade. Jebus. Why don't you put your HD Rotational Speed, GPU Memory Bus Width, and RAM Chip Density requirements out there while your at it? Come on, it's not good enough to be halfway pedantic, you have to go full bore!

GPU! For office!!! Is this a joke?!
who are microsoft targetting with these 'improved' versions of office?
the advanced features will only be used by people who already used them from previous versions.
anyone buying and using it for the first time will just be bombarded with unnecessary confusion.
i think it will just displace people into using open office for its simplicity and its unbloated requirements
Especially for Excel - it is frequency used for Data Mining, or generally analysis. This implies large data sets.
