IT SEEMS THAT after years of thinking about it, Microsoft is finally getting around to releasing a Zune phone.
Yesterday the Vole released an upgrade to the Zune desktop software and at the same time admitted that a phone of some sort is being developed.
Of course it didn't write a press release. The admission was in the Zune.inf file, which is at C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune\ . In the Microsoft.NTx86 and Microsoft.NTamd64 sections, there is a device listed as being "Phone.Device."
According to Long Zheng at istartedsomething, the hardware IDs in the file belong to Microsoft which means that the phone device must be Voleware.
Maybe there will be a hint or two at the Mobile World Congress next month. However while the new Zune interface is pretty good evidence we doubt that the smartphone market will welcome another newcomer. µ
More likely to be the Windows Mobile 7 upgrade that has been waiting in the wings for what feels like eons.
Which will no doubt use Zune desktop for music and marketplace for apps.
Zune Phone, or WinMo7 based Phone with Zune software on it? From all the hiring of folks to bring a Zune and Xbox live experience to WinMo it seems more likely Zune is going to become some kind of media suite for WinMo7 than an actual phone.
After all, MS doesn't want to do what they claimed Google is doing with the Nexus One and shooting its own OEMs.
