Bill Gates speaks up on the 'Google problem'

Not his concern
Tue Jan 26 2010, 01:09

TAKING A BREAK from global philanthropy, Bill Gates has chipped in his tuppence worth on China's Internet policy by stating that the Internet needs to thrive as an engine of free speech.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, Gates said he felt that official Internet censorship policies are very limited. When questioned about Steve Ballmer's remark on China's 'Google problem', Gates replied without referring to Google.

"The Chinese efforts to censor the Internet have been very limited. It's easy to go around it, and so I think keeping the Internet thriving there is very important," he said. "You've got to decide: Do you want to obey the laws of the countries you're in, or not? If not, you may not end up doing business there."

However, Gates stayed on the fence by not actually answering the question he himself posed. Why would he, when the Vole already has Steve Ballmer charging around like a, well, bull in a China shop?

Ballmer's comments last week that his company must comply with the laws and customs of any country where it does business have already been highlighted in an article on US double standards by China's official news agency, Xinhua. µ

"Google" problem?

Apparently Gates did not make all his money by caring about his customers' welfare. This issue did not "just" involve censorship -- it was triggered due to a Chinese cyberattack on Google via Microsoft software. 99% of all the hacks and malware attacks on the Internet involve Microsoft software and ever-present security vulnerabilities. So it was more of a "Microsoft problem" than a "Google problem". Nice setup there.

You can certainly see that Gates is NOT "retired", and is still actively spouting propaganda for Microsoft. Some "philanthropist".

Common sense

I think what Bill said makes perfect sense. Google would do the best to the people in China by staying there and abide by the laws there. Law and order prevails.

@joe: "law" does not equal "morality",

nor does "profit" imply "merited".

And "trust fund" is another term for "tax shelter": Bill still controls the pile to some degree, and gets an income from it, plus expenses for PR firms, and flitting around pretending to be doing good works.

Patriotic citizen?

It's not just Google that China is bad-mouthing and attacking...they are also slamming the USA's Internet policies (and the culture of the USA in general), while executing constant cyber attacks on the USA and the rest of the world.

But of course, this is not Bill Gates' concern. He just recommends focusing on the almighty dollar, patriotism and morality do not seem to be words in his vocabulary.

The Bill Gates Show

There is a joke that only one copy of Windows was sold in China...the rest are all illegal copies. Bill Gates opinion on this:

"As long as they are going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade." (Bill Gates, 1998).

I guess now is the time that Microsoft wants to start collecting from China, according to the new Bill Gates Show.

It is just too bad that the clever Chinese seem to have found so many hundreds of security holes in their "free" copies of Windows, and are exploiting these to the detriment of the rest of the world. Oh well, I guess we are all now paying the price of Bill Gates' Microsoft "doing business" with China.

Microsoft employees

@Pascal Monetary -

Are you complaining about your inability to form a coherent comment with which to defend your employer?

I agree with bigger_luddite; Microsoft has shown little to no business ethics during Bill Gates' (and now Ballmer's) reign. Gates is not operating at arms length from Microsoft: he is right in there trying to do damage control, as it was their software that allowed Google to be attacked. Gates and Co. seem not to care how they make money, as long as they are making money.

@medium_sized

I'm sure Pascal Monett meant a now (thankfully) moderated nonsense "comment". Since I took it wrong for a second too, I apologize to him on behalf of all Luddites for this mistake.

But thanks to moderators for suppressing utter nonsense.

Security vulnerabilities?

have progressed right along with every release or revision of their software. Looks like other parties know how to use the back doors too.
