IBM steps up its Sun conversion programme

Software speeds up the transfer

IBM IS NOT LETTING UP in its campaign to poach customers from Sun.

Sun's customers had been leaving in droves as HP and IBM swooped like vultures on the company, which was unable to fight back until the European Commission approved Oracle's takeover.

Now that Oracle's purchase has been approved, it looks like Big Blue is continuing to target Sun customers with its sales teams.

According to InfoWorld, developers at IBM have built software tools to automate some manual processes to help accelerate Sun migrations, IBM said.

Apparently the code identifies Sun assets, provisions the target IBM environment, and streamlines workload transitions.

It means that migrations can be made from Sun Solaris to Linux or IBM AIX. Applications and middleware also can be moved to IBM systems.

The result is that the time needed to move from Sun to IBM systems can now go from weeks to days for some clients, according to IBM.

Big Blue is clearly targeting those customers who don't necessarily want to remain loyal to Sun but can't be bothered to change. We're not sure if this is a valid target market but if it works no one can complain, other than Oracle. µ

Maybe I need new glasses...

What is this article about? Is there some inscrutable IBM activity that turns Sun applications into Linux or AIX applications?

This is more like a tweet than an article, if it is cut down to actual facts.

Please do better than that.
