Motorola sues RIM

You used our ideas longer than you should

MAKER OF PHONES WITHOUT WIRES, Motorola is suing the maker of expensive SMS machines, Research In Motion (RIM), for using its ideas longer than it agreed.

At the heart of the case is proprietary wireless technology owned by Motorola pertaining to WiFi access, user interface and power management. Motorola says that RIM's licence to use this technology expired in 2007.

According to Telecom Tiger, RIM failed to come to the negotiation table with a new licence plan that pleased Motorola. However, RIM is still using the technology.

As with all the other mobile court cases that seem to be happening at the moment, Motorola has gone to the US International Trade Commission to try to get imports of RIM devices banned. This is in addition to the lawsuit filed in a federal court in Texas.

Motorola is asking for an injunction banning RIM products in the US, although we suspect it would probably be happy just for RIM to buy another licence. µ
