ACCORDING TO A REPORT from the National Fraud Office, banking and card-not-present crimes are costing the private sector millions.
Today the NFO warned that online banking, card-not-present, and cheque fraud have lead to increased losses for organisations. It explained that in 2008 losses in all three areas totalled £704.33 million, adding that in 2009 card-not-present fraud alone had risen by 14 per cent to £609.99 million.
Online banking fraud has risen dramatically since 2007 according to the report, and it expects this trend to continue. It said, "These losses coincide with a significant increase in the number of phishing sites targeted against UK banks and building societies. Likewise malware, spyware and money mules continue to cause problems for the banking industry and its customers."
Telecoms companies are also feeling the fraud pinch, they warned. It said that according to the Telecommunications UK Fraud Forum (TUFF), losses in the industry cost about 2.4 per cent of all annual profits.
Perhaps things will improve soon however, especially since the long arm of the law has grabbed hold of some of the main people involved in these threats. Just this month Renukanth Subramaniam, a prolific former trader at DarkMarket, a cyber thief hangout run as an undercover sting by the FBI, pleaded guilty to fraud and ID theft charges.
Renukanth Subramaniam, who goes by the name JiLsi, pleaded guilty last week to charges resulting from his tendency to use skimming tools and people's PIN numbers to build up a criminal empire, and is still awaiting sentencing.
DarkMarket was home to some 2,000 criminals who bought and sold the equipment needed to perpetrate ID theft. Although those that used it will mourn its passing, we suspect that their victims will not. Current estimates suggest that criminal profits associated with the site could run into tens of millions of pounds.
Also bracing himself for a legal book hurling is pensioner John McHugh, who's online alias is Devilman. McHugh was running a card printing operation from his home and when it was raided police found the card details of some 1,000 people amongst his Saga mags and tea and crumpets.
Both of them face up to ten years in jail. µ
The curious thing is that most UK banks seem to have no interest in security.
My (soon to be ex-)bank believes that a fixed password and a fixed passcode is suitable security for making online money transfers and all general online banking activities.
The same geniuses also take a "because we say so" approach to telephone calls. I'm expected to believe that they're the bank, without them providing any proof. Before you ask, yes, in the cases I've experienced it was actually the bank; as I called them back using the contact number I have on file.
Can anyone think of a good reason why the banks don't seem to be interested in security?
They should stick to defrauding the public like most businesses who advertise on TV, it is encouraged and there is never any jail time.
Tens of millions stolen and a prison sentence for up to 10 years?
Im thinking prison sentences should be based upon the crime + how much money is un-recoverable. Lets say they got 20 million but the police are only able to recover 15 million. The crime itself should merit up to 10 years but the 5 million unrecoverable should carry an additional say 50 years. Something based upon the average working person divided by the amount lost. I was nice saying just 50 years. Hearing tens of millions and getting a mere up to 10 years is disgusting because I just imagine them digging up some cash they burred when they get out on good behavior then living it up. Not a bad haul for a 10 year sentence.
The second thing that amazes me is there are so many criminals out there who steal credit cards and peoples information.
@them. Start a blog and post a link to it.
When the victim is also its own villan, "help" then is not the word, and neither is "control". Sincerity is. The "fianancial sector" is only interested in the fiscal bottom line because it is greed and not service nor employment which drives this gorilla. Like all bookies, they don't really care how the game is played so long as they have the ways and means to make a fast buck. Dis-Agree so soon eh?
Greed, or its alterego, fear, is about greed[-cum-fear] and nothing else. Nothing else [which is why fear is automatically tagged to greed for fear is greed's only limit and vice-versa]. So, why all the yakking, spinning, etc? Because from greed, comes its tag-along buddies, like, "Tax", employment, "dragged screaming" service, and anything one cares to 'fink of. So, where does the solution lies? It lies within that fellow squimishly peeping into the mirror. Sincerity to one self first and not to others which is hypocrisy when the former is lacking, the latter being the contemporary New World Order Voyuerism [NWOV]. It is always others' problem no matter how we see it. You cannot help the victim who is his own villan.
Error teaches learning through witnessing with lucidity and sincerity. Errors are not for owning/addicting which the NWOV grooms and sustains. There is always one devil to finger-point at. It is truly a miracle that one's preaching is seldom targetted at one self but Nature being who She is, when the anger-cum-guilt pendulum swings towards one abandonment, guilt then rules and guilt is that which you'd denied but know is true and then become angry about but then denied but know is true …… ad infinitum.
So, what is, say, a "PIN" number for? For protecting the "financial bookie" from loose mouthed/behaviour finger-pointers whenever they broadcast their insecurity. People just do not have any sense of self-respect/security [because they are constantly-disrespecting/waiting-to-disrespect others]. Why? Because they are always projecting their problems/ignorance through crying "wolf"/"devil". Within the realm of Relativity, not only does it takes a thief to catch a thief, it takes one to know another. More to the point, within such a mostly comparative dimension, people cannot be taught for teaching here means, "not-wanting-to-learn". Within judgement of others, we can only learn through witnessing our own errors and not reacting to our errors.
Helping the dumb and the stupid only makes them more so, no "if's" and "but's". Cruelty is overt damage but comfort is covert self-damage and neither one is better than the other. This is because both are one and the same, depending on the moment/timing. Dichotomies exist to promote going-nowhere circular activities, Devolution's version of infinity. Humanity might have made whiplash strides within the material realm but within the dimension of Reality, we are still at the Stone Age having just discovered fire … and calling it, "Me/I".
To overcome self greed[-cum-fear] leading, hopefully to the avoidance but not the evasion of Greed, the victim must first recognised and then neutralised his own villany and that starts with pointing the finger at oneself with the same fervor. Realisation of one self, hopefully leading to the realisation of The Self/Reality, is not the same as guilt-cum-fear which the hallelujahs are promoting and sustaining through their denial of their "hormones"/nature. It is Reality who neutralises all our nonsensical concepts, especially the concept of "Zero"[-cum-Zillions], oka Greed/Growing-Bigger through the concept of onwership/dominance.
It's peanuts. I'm actually impressed it's that low.
