Firefox 3.6 is out

Free and just in time for Europe's IE revolt
Fri Jan 22 2010, 10:19

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE OUTFIT Mozilla has released its free Firefox 3.6 web browser.

The Mozzarella Foundation's Firebadger 3.6 includes better support for web standards and access to more than 6,000 free add-ons that allow users to customise their web browser experience.

The outfit claims that its latest browser is more than 20 per cent faster than Firefox 3.5 and includes extensive under the hood work to improve performance.

It has new features like customisable browser themes called Personas, a ground-breaking Plugin updater and improved Javascript performance.

This release comes on the heels of the IE insecurity crisis in Europe where Germany and France told people not to use Internet Exploder until a security hole was fixed. Huge numbers of people downloaded Firefox and it is possible that they will keep using it.

The Vole said it fixed the IE6 flaw yesterday but the two European countries have not yet given an all clear.

Amusingly a Microsoft advisory about spoofed websites, which is fairly vital in the crisis, claims that if you use IE8 you will be safe. But if you try to tell Microsoft you don't believe its claim or you think the information is or is not helpful, the Vole's website crashes. Have a go here. µ

@ Paul...

It's not that 3.6 is "popular", it's that 3.5.x users, like me, are being prompted to upgrade to 3.6 when they launch Firefox.

amusing.

when i clicked [no] button as an answer to the question "was this information helpful?", the pop-up crashes with some mumbling about how their site is having "some technical difficulties". try it if you haven't!

Firefox crashes

Firefox crashes on me. But only when I'm on a specific porn site which relies heavily on flash. So I think flash is the problem so when flash tanks, it drags firefox down with it. Other than that, I'm a happy surfer. :)

FF6

I don't know what some of you are banging on about i been running this since the beta came out and haven't had one problem with it. unlike 3.5 which was getting on my last nerve.

For those running firefox on a mac. maybe you should try upgrading to a PC, then you would find most of your problems would simply, disappear. plus you would have this stuff called dollars stuffed into your wallet to boot.lol

Crash...?

I wonder what the reason is for those crashes people talk about...

I routinely have this thing open for a week or two straight with ~500 tabs (that's five hundred, not fifty) and ~15 add-ons, in Win7 x64 RC, and its crashes are rarer than free beer. And it's been so since since about Firebird, many, MANY builds before Firefox 1.0, as far as crashes are concerned.

What gives...?

re: Non-admin updates

Let Firefox do it itself? It'll update when there's a new release.

Only if you're admin.

Task Manager Torture

Ive used Firefox since it came out. Wonderful program and it is faster then IE.xx. But every time there is an upgrade it seems to get more and twitchy! The add on's are GREAT Learn from this MICROSLOTH it's what we all want! The biggest problem I've had since 3.0 is the fact 50% of the time i have to goto Task manager to end the app so I can open it again. it will sit there forever soaking up my resources until I do this. Usually more then 120megs. This is really annoying to say the least. Does anyone know why it does this?

Crash city

I have been a Firefox user for a while now, but have been forced to switch. Firefox crashes alot. More than I have ever seen from a web browser. It is a bit faster & I love the addons, but if it won't work properly. I won't use it.

Open Source Fail

"no mention of the new "Crash like fc*k" feature? It has crashed 4 times for me in just about 5 hours of usage.

If this were IE we'd be hearing about it no end."

Not to mention that if you complain you'll get backhanded by open source developers saying "Here, download the debug symbols and step through the code one line at a time and tell me where it buggers." And if you refuse, you get fed the normal BS about how you have to be part of the community, pitch in and help resolve bugs, blah blah blah. It's all the same. As a Linux user I see it all the time, in every open source project.

Non-admin updates?

How are "family admins" meant to keep family member's firefox installs automatically up-to-date for non-admin users? Anyone know?

This is the single reason why everyone I look after still uses IE - automatic security updates.

Imagine

To all the IT admins out there. Imagine if you had to support Firefox in a +100 computer company. I get annoyed when I roll over to 1 PC and find it on banking or intranet dont work (to name a few) yet alone everyone using it.

People moan about IE but it works, I have no issues my users have no issues...

Oh and 20% faster OMG how can people beleive this. It used to be a case where newer browsers made surfing faster but not now with net speeds even at just 1mb. The only place new browsers are needed is on smartphones.

And for the average user IE8 is no more less secure because the average user will download a program after a popup tells them they have a virus on there PC. LOL.

To be secure in offices sit behind a nice secure firewall and have routine nightly scans, its the safest way as everything has holes its only a matter of time until people find them.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
