Asustek is heading for the Ion 2

20-inch eeeeepc

TAIWANESE MANUFACTURER Asustek is planning to launch a 20-inch eepc netbook based around Nvidia's Ion 2 chipset.

According to Digitimes, the Eee Top ET2010PNT will use both Intel's Atom D510 dual-core processor and Nvidia's GeForce G310 graphics chip. For those who came in late this chip is a renamed clone of Nvidia's 40nm DirectX 10.1-ready GeForce 210 GPU.

It is not the only outfit planning an ION 2-based PC system. Zotac is also planning to launch an Ion 2-based PC system codenamed MAG HD-ND01. The system will have an Atom D410 or D510 processor with a Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics chip and will launch in March with a price of $249.

All this is a slap in the face to Intel and Microsoft's cunning plan to try and keep netbooks under 10 inches in screen size. It is starting to look like they will have an even harder job now that Broadcom has recently started supplying Crystal HD technology-featured video decoding chips for the Intel Pine Trail platform.

This will mean that PC makers can design a 1080p-based video supporting netbook platform that needs a slightly bigger screen.

Nvidia will not be happy with the Broadcom move, however, as the Pine Trail chipset is much cheaper than Nvidia's Ion 2 and could harm its sales. µ

You guys are clueless!!!

I thought that was a mistake. But then you even comment on that one. 20 inch is definitely a nettop, NOT NETBOOK.

Huge mistake - poor journalism

It is more than obvious that this is NOT A NETBOOK. It's a nettop (an all-in-one desktop).
At first I thought that this was just a mistake, but it seems that your editor is totally clewless - otherwise he wouldn't go on saying: "All this is a slap in the face to Intel and Microsoft's cunning plan to try and keep netbooks under 10 inches in screen size."
Very dissapoint. This is The Inquirer after all. Show some respect...

ION2 Chipset simply can't be done

@ssj4Gogeta The ion2 can't be install as the ION 1 because the pinetrail chip is not like the atom 280 or 270. The new processors (pinetrail) already have a video chipset in their chip, and a pc can´t have 2 integrated gpu's (pinetrail + ion 2).

"as the Pine Trail chipset is much cheaper than Nvidia's Ion 2 and could harm its sales."

You need a pine trail chipset if you want to use ION2. ION2 will connect via PCIe to the pine trail chipset, so it's just a normal graphics card, not a chipset. They can't make a chipset for the new Atoms because they don't have a license to.

ION 2 32 SP

Last time I check the news ION 2 will have 2x pipeline compare to ION. ION has 16 pipeline (9300 / 9400) which make ION 2 as least as fast as old Geforce 8600 GT with 32 pipeline. As far as I know GT 210 is just 16 SP. Does Nvidia make special ION 2 with 32 SP GT 310?
