Google looks at insiders

Were employees involved in hack?
Mon Jan 18 2010, 14:55

INTERNET SEARCH GODZILLA Google is said to have turned its attention to its own workers to find out the vector of the recent China hack attack.

When Google first posted about the hacking incident it suggested that no stone would be left unturned in its attempts to chase the attack down to its source. It appears now that it thinks it might not need to look very far.

According to a Reuters report, the firm is trying to figure out if it was its own employees in China that helped to make the attack possible. The news agency claims to have spoken to two sources about the issue, and since then has got some sort of official response from the firm.

"We're not commenting on rumour and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation, and we simply cannot comment on the details," a Google spokeswoman told reporters.

According to reports from the local area, some Chinese workers have been put on leave, while others have been banned from accessing the company network. Google has neither confirmed nor denied these reports.

One other thing that is still up for debate is whether Google will or will not be closing its Chinese offices. We cannot help but wonder whether this investigation might make that decision a lot easier to make.

To any Google employees in China who are still able to read this, trust no one. µ
