UK PC MAKER Mesh has launched what it reckons is the world's first notebook to support Directx11 graphics.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of ATI's launch of the 5670, which promises to bring Directx11 to the masses, despite there not being much call for it yet.
The Edge DX uses an Intel Core i7 720 QM quad core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 4GB of DDR3 1066MHz memory, a 320GB SATA hard drive and a DVD Writer.
The full Directx11 support is provided via an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory, powering a 15.6-inch 1080p display.
As you might expect, this is not all-day computing notebook, but we're assured you should get around three hours of battery life.
As well as the usual webcam, card reader, WiFi and Bluetooth, there's also a fingerprint reader thrown in to make sure your precious data is protected when you duck off for a quick break during a LAN party.
"With the launch of the EDGE DX, we're leading the world and, as a British PC manufacturer, this is an achievement that we are immensely proud of," boasted Tony Riccardi, sales and marketing director for Mesh.
It's certainly a pretty good technical achievement and being able to play the latest games on the go with all the settings turned up to a decent level has some appeal, but at £899 we can't see hordes of people rushing out to buy one.
The Edge DX launches today which doesn't give you much time save your pennies if you are thinking about getting one. µ

I7 or not 1.6 MHz sounds pretty darn slow and not worth the effort, am I right?
Hard to pin this kind of claim down I think. Doing a quick check on the interwibble, I can find lots of claims that companies were thinking about it, but these guys actually seem to be selling.
I reckon, in situations like this, FIRST just means that the big corporates need to wade through a ton of red tape before they can make a claim and, in the meantime, smaller local companies with hungry PR teams are already out of the gate and claiming.
File this kind of thing under the same heading as "Inquirer: Better rogister than the Register".
I was in the MESH showroom when the stores peoplestarted to put them on display yesteday, so could have walked away with one on the spot. Seems like a good deal, but I was in the market for something thin & light and I don't really game, so I went with an Atom powered 10 incher for 1/2 the weight and 1/4 the price :)
I have an Asus G73 on the way within the next week, DX11 5870 Mobility inside. Shown at CES, first DX11 lappy the mesh is not.
Nice to see that one local hero is still swinging
From an army of around 20 companies (including Apricot, Elonex, Dan, Evesham, Time, Tiny, Opus, MJN and many, many more), these MESH guys seem to be the last man standing
I know it's a bit like Curling - taking an interest in something that wouldn't normally interest you but COME ON TEAM GB - we still want you to win
Last time checked DX 11 was bringing powerful desktops to their knees, so this laptop is more gimmick than a really functional DX 11 gaming machine unless you want to watch a slide show. From the processor in it forget using this laptop as portable, it will suck the battery dry in no time. Laptops have never been very good at gaming and when you try and make one run the resource hogging proprietary DX 11 all I can say is good luck with that.
as usual it will probly take 3 months or more before we in sweden will see any of the top models...
I would very much like a 17" desktop replacement since my apartment is tiny, and by that I mean a DX11 compatible replacement.
cos it's a mesh

Deviltech had a Dx11 Notebook on sale before Christmas. Even the Envy is late compared to this one. Maybe it is the first British Manufacturer with a Dx11 Notebook.
The 5650 is fairly good but much more interesting are the 5750 and 5850.
HP started accepting orders on their Envy 15 a couple weeks ago, and it includes a Radeon 5830. That's only for the US as far as I know, but mine is scheduled to ship in 4 days. Not sure if this really is the first DX11 laptop in the world. Might be a tie ;)
Are you sure it's not £1,899?
