ATI launches 5670

AMD wants DX11 for all
Thu Jan 14 2010, 05:05

ATI IS BRINGING OUT the latest in graphics support for the masses with the launch of the 5670, based on the same 40nm process that it used in the 5700 series.

The launch forms part of ATI's 'sweet spot' strategy which sees launches of the latest technologies, first for the enthusiast market, followed by the mid-market, then the mainstream value users and finally trailed by the budget segment.

In this instance, the 5670 follows on from the 5700 series and is aimed squarely at the mainstream market. According to AMD around two thirds of PC gamers use graphics cards that cost less than $100 and have a display resolution of less than 1920x1200.

As well as full Directx11 support, the 5670 includes ATI Stream to boost tasks such as transcoding and hardware Flash acceleration. Furthermore, the 5670 supports ATI's Eyefinity multi-monitor technology, with the reference design able to support up to three displays, but with the possibility of third parties supporting four should they opt for a two slot design.

With a total compute power of 620Gflops, the 5670 has a core clock speed of 775MHz and 512MB or 1GB of 128bit GDDR5 memory clocked at 1000MHz with a data rate of 4Gbps and up to 64GBps of memory bandwidth.

The reference design features five SIMD engines, 400 stream processing units and 20 texture units.

The 5670 will draw about 14W at idle and around 61W under load. This means that the reference design doesn't need an extra power connector, however third party versions that can be overclocked might need one.

The budget end of the market will get a similar refresh next month with the launch of the 5500 and 5450. AMD is aiming these upcoming cards at basic users as well as low profile and home theatre PCs thanks primarily to the fact that the 5450 can be passively cooled, thereby reducing noise.

These budget cards will also support up to three displays using Eyefinity as well as HDMI 1.3a, software crossfire and hybrid crossfire on the 5450.

With that sub $100 sweet spot in mind, ATI is pushing the 512MB 5670 with a recommended retail price of $99, however the 1GB version will come in at closer to $120.

With the cards tipping up from today, ATI has assured us that there will be enough supply to meet demand. µ

Great Multimedia replacement card

Production PC's I bought from Gateway a few years ago on the cheap both new, and refurbished are the target I have in mind for this card. Those machines came with either ATI 2400XT, or Nvida 8500GT. Those Mobo's had the PCIe X1 slot below the X16 so that a double slot card would take out the TV tuners that were stock with those computers. Those old cards also did not support audio through the HDMI port. The 5670 takes care of both those problems being a single slot, low power, and audio on board. While not a gaming card per say, it does well for what I desire, and it CAN play games pretty good. Great review on this site. http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5670-review-test-crossfire/ Dongles for the Display port can also be found on the cheap on Amazon for about 27.00usd for what ever monitor connection you need if you want to set up the 3 monitor set up the chip also supports. Reading on newegg.com about the XFX single slot version seems to have a lot of comments about drivers not working, so I am waiting for Visontek's version to come out on retail, and they usually have a dongle or some other value added thing with it. I also want to see if the 1g card is also a low profile, single slot card. The old 2400XT card had 40 stream processors, and this one has 400. I had no problem playing older games with the 2400XT so this should be a great replacement card for me.

Where is the DirectCompute API support!?

I just got a Sapphire HD4670 1GB DDR3 Arctic cooling edition.

No complaints card's great for the price But I'm VERY DISSAPOINTED since it doesn't support the DirectCompute feature.

Nvidia calls it CUDA If I'm not mistaken.

They support it on their stupid GF 210 & hell even 8600GT!

It's very disappointing on AMD's part to only offer DirectCompute support on HD47xx+ & HD 57xx + series & not the lower end.

Besides this card doesn't make any sense for the price. Unless it reaches $80 or less it's useless.

Your better off with a HD4670 that as 320 Stream Processors & HD5670 has only 400.

Pity I thought HD5670 would follow HD4670's trend & slap in performance AT LEAST equal if not better than the HD4770.

Not to be.

This proves that we need Nvidia as much as we need AMD.

Can't blame AMD they'll just milk the market now GPU seems to be their only profiting section at the moment.

But seriously no DirectCompute API support on the lower end is a MAJOR EPIC FAILURE!

New ATI cards and manufacturin process

Update

The 40nm is to be used, till Q4 2010 depending on availability and cost.
Possible GPU die srinking from 40nm to 32nm in Q4 2010 - Q1 2011 :). Nobody is perfect :-D.

5830 confirmed, spec core 650, memory 800 and shaders 1280 most likely. 5830 slots between 5770 and 5850. ATI working on 5950 possible launch in Q1 2010 on 40nm code name Hemlock Pro.

Possible variants 5860. Any new refreshments of Evergreen will include new variants of Evergreen with increased core frequencies, memory clocks and number of shaders.
5890 and 5890x2 in works at ATI response to Fermi.

Rumors ATI may possibly increase bus width at some stage from 256 bit to 384 bit less likely but not impossible, 256 bit bus is sufficient at present :-D.

@RobD : whatcha talkin bout foo?

ATI isn't having any issues with TSMC -- yields are reported to be around 60-80%

it seems that nVidia, with their behemoth chip, is the one with issues.

Aleksa???????????

There is no way that AMD is going to put out a 32nm GPU anytime soon. AMD gets their GPUs fabbed at TSMC who is currently having issues with their 40nm node. TSMC operates at 1/2 nodes now and will go from 40nm to 28nm. nVidia also uses TSMC to produce their GPUs

AMD is going to have their CPUs produced by Global Foundries, their former manufacturing group that recently spun off. They are trying their damnedest to bring 32nm to market for CPUs. They will be lucky to bring these chips to market this year as it is their first hi K metal gate product and they have yet to finalize their process and start ramping. They are not going to be in a position to be fabricating GPUs when they are going to have a hard time meeting CPU demand.

Bottom line, there is no 32nm GPU on the horizon except for the next gen of Intel chips with integrated GPU due out at the end of this year.

Nice work

I have a 4670 in my aging SFF case.. this is exciting stuff.. I'd love to upgrade to this.. Wonder how its performance compares to the 4670.

Ho hum

When the 4770 came out, I predicted that it was a preview for the 5670. I figured, and I think I was correct, that a 4770 with fewer ROPs and texture units and made with a more refined process would have low enough power consumption and high enough performance to make it a great card. But AMD chose another path and this fails as a mainstream DX11 gaming card and DX9/10 performance is too close to older, competitive cards.

I'm sure it will sell fairly well all the same.

Dual fermi?

Best power up the three phase and the diesel generator.

erm...

@Aleksa

OR fermi falls even furthur behind with delays and tsmc struggle even more with nvdia's over complcated design! TSMC struggling as it is so who do you think will be getting the most problems at with yield! ATI's cvards will be pretty solid by the time ferm see's the light of day.

ATI relsed this, hence avoiding such a major leap until they've perfected the idea. Even intel as calmed down on its fermi larbee design relsing its not viable quite at the moment. Nvida on the other hand need to take the risks as they know themselves there falling behind!

No ATI fanboi or what not, Just my opinion and how i see things panning out

Nvdia seems to be heading in only one direction and they seem to big headed to do anything sensible about it. Shame as compitition is needed for the consumers :(

ATI to launches 5830, 5890 and 5990X2

By the end of January - around the 25th 5830 is to be launched: same PCB, cooling and connectivity as 5850. ATI 5830 is 5850 that didn't make the cut :-D.

5890 is to be launched around April - middle of March to fight Fermi 380 = Geforce 380/385 (Fermi small quantities, 225 TDP to hot). The 5890X2 is to be launched to fight dual Fermi video card Geforce 395 around end of April middle to end of May depending on competition :-D.

There is some information pointing that 5830, 5890 and 5890X2 may be a 32nm GPU :-D.

Regards

Aleksa

Finally! ... but too close.

Great news that the cheaper varieties of the 5000-series is on their way.

Seems, IMO, like 5670 is a bit too close to 5750 in price though.
