Confusion reigns as rumours swirl around Apple tablet

Orange denies seeing it
Wed Jan 13 2010, 12:42

THE RUMOUR MILL is working overtime on the Apple tablet after Orange was forced to back down on Stephane Richard's statement that the vapourware existed.

Apple is widely expected to reveal the new tablet in a couple of weeks, but Steve Jobs apparently was incandescent with rage when the soon-to-be chief executive of France Telecom said that not only did it exist but it had a video camera on board capable of streaming.

Now Orange has back-paddled fast, issuing a press release saying that Richard's comments had been misinterpreted, or misunderstood, he didn't say them, there was an echo in the room, the dog ate his homework and he was possessed by spirits or aliens at the time.

An Orange spokesperson said that Richard was "merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available."

Hmm, that was not the way that sane people on the street or even their dogs would have read it. Orange executives have a habit of ignoring Apple's pathological demands for secrecy and releasing information before Saint Steve has come down from the Mount.

More rumours emerged from CES where an anonymous source accused Apple of constraining supplies by ordering shedloads of DRAM and 10-inch screens so no one else could have them.

Suppliers in Asia are reportedly telling customers that no 10-inch LCD or OLED panels are available, as Apple is buying them all and no one else will be able to buy any for months.

Apple has cornered flash memory supplies before but if this story is true and it's gobbling up 10-inch screens this can only be an attempt to stop other manufactures from making tablets.

Apple is reportedly buying up OLED panels as well which might mean that in the future Steve Jobs will come down from the mount with something that has an OLED display screen.

But we have our own theory. Apple is buying up all the supplies of Etch-a-sketch, which it will rebadge and flog for $1,000. That will make fanboys praise how you can draw a little house with wheels and then turn the box upside down and the picture vanishes like magic. Apple will insist that this is the 'real tablet' and all others are copies and then the thing will sell like hotcakes. µ

Nice one again Nick.

Another fun to read article, and there's not many of those coming out of The Inq these days. You're like the last ray of comedy left there.

Can we get some Nvidia articles from Charlie also?

I want The Inq back to it's best, not just as another tech news site with tech articles and no comedy. I want the friction and fun!

Apples and Oranges do not mix

"I have no idea how this executive could put his foot in his mouth so much"

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Apple only allowed O2 to carry the iPhone?

2nd wave

In this time of tight purse strings, I do hope the public will cast a half-interested eye on whatever Apple comes up with, and then wait the 2 months or so for more functional, more customizable and open models from Asus, HP, and others to show up for 1/4 of the price Apple will be extorting for their shiny, locked-down, no-user-serviceable-parts version.

Also: if the "AppleSlate" does not have a full sunlight-readable screen, it will probably be doomed right from the start.

@Chris

And another MAC fanboy heard from. Hey Chris, are you and Dakota Greywolf wearing the same brand of tinfoil hat too?

I agree with Tom and Malcolm, Nick's articles are great and the comments even better. Nothing like reading the days news with beer in hand and watching the trolls and fanboys foam at the mouth. Nick is a genius....

INQs Brand of Humor

...is STALE.

C'mon guys! You need some more writers with more wit versus the usual dribble I've been reading over the last years.

Orange Fail

Apples and Oranges never mix well.

I have no idea how this executive could put his foot in his mouth so much - either he truly doesn't know about it (and hence didn't go through Apple's iKeepThingsSecret training), or he's stupid (or Apple are stupid to not make it evidently clear to all that know about the product that they should keep their mouths shut until Apple has released it.

Adequate achievement of humor

And pretty good writing. Try expressing a full thought yourself, Wolfie, rather than just the easy carping.

Hard to believe Apple actually has the market sewn up on LCDs. Do they actually end up buying them all? Or just screw their supplies into over-production?

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
