AMD brings forward six-core chips

Second quarter now
Thu Dec 31 2009, 11:27

THE RUMOUR MILL claims that AMD is bringing forward the launch of its six-core desktop CPUs.

Details are fairly light. One report of the rumour is at Fudzilla and therefore is likely to originate from suppliers rather than direct from Chimpzilla.

If the rumour is correct, and that seems to us to be likely, it is only a slight change of plan for AMD. It will mean bringing the chips code-named 'Thuban' forward by a quarter to match Intel's launch of its Core i7 980X processor.

While AMD's six-core range of chips will hit the shops a bit later than Intel's Core i7 980X, that will still thrust AMD into the running. It will not take much because the 980X was reported as Intel's only six-core currently planned for 2010.

AMD's six-core 45nm processors will come with 6MB L3 cache, C-state performance boost as well as DDR3 1333MHz support. They will be supported by existing AM3 motherboards and should work in most existing models. µ

@ Engineer

Thank you.

I think the same goes for Nvidia except here its not the compiler, they call it optimization. This is also why the ATI driver package is 69.5MB and 133 MB for Nvidia.

In Real world performance I find that if you take a $200 Intel and AMD chip side by side they perform pretty much the same.

NOW WE KNOW

Now we know why Intel systems are so good at benchmarks and not real world performance.

For what?

"It will mean bringing the chips code-named 'Thuban' forward by a quarter to match Intel's launch of its Core i7 980X processor."
Thuban will definitely not compete with 980X, as it can't win against the quad core i7 offerings. It'll be offered cheap, in a desperate try to hold some ground for AMD until they release the fabled "bulldozer" chip.
Thuban will come with 6 cores, but at ridiculously low speed to keep the processor from being it incompatible with the majority of AMD motherboards due to 140W+ TDP.
With core i5 and i3 offerings, AMD will have a ridiculously tough year in 2010. Selling phenoms and athlons barely at breakeven point or at loss. I honestly hope that bulldozer and bobcat come out to bee really good, or in 2012, the world will really end for AMD. And we all will be in intel hands.

You... I... What...

"The IBM cell uses 7 cores, and is roughly 6x faster then a core i7 985."

Yeah, sure, maybe if the i7's running Python.

...faster..but not needed..

"6 core not for me
I will stick with 4 core. I believe 6 core will carry a MHz penalty. Two extra cores don't begin to make up for a MHz hit."

The IBM cell uses 7 cores, and is roughly 6x faster then a core i7 985.

If you remember when quad cores were mass available, like the q6600, they had a cpu frequency of 2.4ghz, now you can get quad-cores with a frequency of 3.4ghz (stock)

@Rayee

Well the Phenom II already did manage beat the C2D on some benchmarks, so obviously a tweaked 6 core version will only improve upon that.

From the wording of your post I'd say you were eating some real nasty tasting humble pie :)

Why AMD

I would like to point out that the Phenom II from AMD does quite nicely in the benchmarks, performing as well as Intel products. No they are not the fastest, but I would prefer if AMD didn't go tits up. I remember when Intel didn't have much competition and I would prefer we don't go back ot those days. Slow, almost stagnant technology progression. Extremely overpriced technology. Yeah, I'll root for AMD even if I don't buy a lot from them. They keep Intel innovating and their prices fair. I don't know about you but I don't want to return to the days of the low end processer costing $500.

@Rayee. All AMD products are crap.

Meh, I think it was better if AMD bankrupt sooner than later. They don't have much money like Intel. Oh, I know the settlement money is going to pay AMD's debt.

From the sound of it...

It seems this chip will finally beat the C2D on some benchmarks...

Too little, too late, and Pathetic...

Thuban? Are you kidding me?

I realize(or maybe just guess) that Thuban won't be in the actual advertising or boxes, and will only be known about by geeks like me. But Thuban is just about the most godawful name they could give to this thing. I could probably blindly stab my finger onto a random page in the dictionary(or in a name book) and come up with a better word than Thuban.

Based on my method, the name of the chip is now "tack." Much, much better than Thuban. And, no, I don't actually expect them to change it to that.

No AM2+ support?

Isn't there any AM2+ support on these new 6 core chips?

Saying that, with DDR2 and DDR3 prices getting closer, I think in 2010 I'll probably upgrade to an AM3 board with DDR3 memory anyway.

Core i7 users can upgrade too

Those with core i7 9xx series chips can upgrade to 6core chips too.

Niiiiiiiice

I've always loved AMD's upgrade path it's great to see that current AM3 users can simple upgrade to these as well.

I'm still on AM2+ but I'm buying a Denab 945 this month from my current 9550 X4. I'm barely scratching 4 cores let alone 6 but nice to see current users can still upgrade.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
