A CRESCENDO OF YAMMERING from industry analysts and soothsayers is predicting that the long rumoured Apple tablet will come to fruition in January.
The latest rumour comes from Boy Genius, stating that a 7-inch tablet is definitely on its way, though a 10-inch version is still unconfirmed.
Previously Silicon Alley Insider said that Apple had begun asking developers to produce apps with a higher resolution, suggesting that the Cappucino company might have some near-term desire for that.
"They've told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution - rather than a fixed 320x480 - their apps should run just fine," said their source.
Silicon Alley Insider continued to say that the device won't be launched in January, just demoed to the public.
This coincides with a report from the Financial Times that states that Apple has allegedly scheduled a media event in San Francisco on Tuesday January 26, 2010, for a major product announcement.
Plenty of other analysts have also chimed in with their predictions.
Also of interest to Apple fans are reports that a 5 megapixel camera is being readied for a fourth generation Iphone and the long rumoured but not yet leaked or announced tablet itself.
Dodgytimes has said that Omnivision won the contract to supply Apple with the new sensors for the next generation Iphone model, and that it expects Iphone shipments to double in 2010.
Despite a lot of contrary arguments to all this speculation, it's seemingly inevitable that Apple will release a tablet. There's never this much hot smoke without some fire. µ

If the tablet is anything like the 27" iMacs, count me OUT. (Not that I would consider paying three times the price for dodgy components anyway.) If I REALLY wanted a Mac, I'd build my own and buy Rebel EFI, at least I'd have a machine with more than a fighting chance of functioning out of the box.

How did this story sneak past Nick? Is he on holiday?
...if it supports artists with stylus-type tools, it's going to be a hit whether or not it makes complete sense to the rest of the world.
If, however, they're so deep into the multitouch fad that all you can do is fingerpaint with it... well, it might be nice to have a web tablet/ebook-reader around the house, but probably not so compelling at an Apple-grade price point.
[Anyone else realize they're trying to ride on the Kindle and snag the e-publishing market? But with all the multimedia goodness because "people don't read."]
why are they going to release an iPhone 4G, when AT&T doesnt even have a complete 3G network....
unless theyre going to release it on Sprint or Verizon
but either way i have to agree with d
cool!

With the e-reader market fragmented and print content providers struggling, the real question is whether Apple will provide comprehensive content deals the way it did with the iTunes store originally. That, not just hardware, is what made ipod a franchise. Look out, Apple may be just about to do something remarkable.
The only surprise here is that someone will actually buy the damned thing. After seeing all the troubles that the iphone has caused people, meaning the quickpwning, itunes and jail breaking. Its amazing that people would want to buy a "neutered" piece of anything from apple. Imagine now what the headlines are going to be after the release?
Apple reinvents the print industry, just like the iphone reinvented the smart-phone. If anything it made the apple smart-phone dumb to have, all that crap and you cant do like use it as an external storage. Then of course apple saved the music industry, yeah sure. And the file sharing didn't have anything to do with the new music revolution? what about mp3 players? the countless that were made cheap as chips so that people could consider digital tangible?
The same with OS10, oh yeah its a masterpiece! Sure if you're a dolt. If you want to do anything usefull, finder is not going to get you there. Then they leave unix as a whole underneath to mock the people that have worked so hard just to take their work and make a closed system out of it. Hey apple if your system is so great? why did you rip so much off it from BSD? Why not really make your own? At least microsoft and IBM have quite a bit of work that they can account for. Apple dint go about anything but making the most expensive things.
Thankyou for putting in to words what I think every time I see an Apple ad.
It seems the three things that they ARE good at are:
1: Making shiny boxes
2: Lying
3: Marketing
(The last two are together in most cases)
I seriously have to respect Apple for their skill at selling overpriced fruit themed toys, that dont even really belong to the buyer.
If they sell this tablet, and they will, it seriously will reflect on how naiive people are.
"It's shiny on the outside, so it must be shiny on the inside"
Basically that's the way it goes. And unfortunately, i don't think its going to change.
Unless Microsoft get their marketing division sorted out, they're not going to get very far these days.
Gio, I don't think it's a 4G Iphone as in LTE...I think the reference is to a fourth generation Iphone as stated in the article.
Even if the Apple tablet is just a Kindle with touch screen capabilities, it'll be the best thing out there. The Kindle is lacking in so many ways (black and white, no touch screen, no ability to highlight), I can't believe Amazon put it's name on it. Will I buy the tablet? Probably not. I can't afford these toys. But believe me, it will sell millions and that's all that matters. Look at the Kindle (New Kindle DX, Dec 2009, $489), it's a horrible tool and it still sells. It's not about if it fits you or not. It's about how much money can I make off of it. And Apple will make a ton.
Wooooot!!!!
FINALLY, an Apple article on the Inq that Nick the Ferret DIDN'T write!
Is everyone going to say all companies in teh entire world copied Apple by releasing a tablet and a phone with a 5 megapixel (yet still crappy) camera?
Behind the times a bit aren't we Apple?
Pricing will have to be pretty interesting... Sizewise it's between the iphone and a regular macbook...
I cannot see people buying these for any more than $800 or so but then people will ask why a cell phone costs almost as much as a tablet.
I know that the Holy Master leaves in california, but I regularly try to hope that companies there realise that the whole bloody world is ahead of the US in 3G coverage and thinking about 4G. So a 4G iphaune would make sense towards the end of 2010... Then again, they did dare release a 2G phone for the US retards when everyone else was already in 3G, so I don't know anymore...
what is exactly considered full screen res for apple then is it 1920x1200 or 1024x768? that means it's graphics will have to be either be a powervr or a tegra then?
hey how often do you see a tablet ... till now i have seen like 30 compared to like 1500 laptops .. well the ones already out may not have multi-touch, but they have a pen - used by students and anyone who need to right and draw directly on pc - so they are useful, and well you will not be designing photoshop or 3ds max on a tablet, so no need for multi-touch anyway .. on the other hand there is some good ones ASUS and HP, not overpriced crap that apple throws at us every now at then with locked OSs, well they maybe renting us the "holly" OS for all i know, you can do nothing with it can you even see the system directory??!!
So many people are excited for the Apple tablet, but I have not seen anyone post a good purpose for the tablet. Some suggest it will be an ereader. If it is priced competitively with ereaders, then it makes sense to me. Is that it though? Surely it won't be a giant iPhone. If it is to compete with netbooks, again it will need to be priced competitively. Will it really be small enough that you would rather carry it around over a 13" Macbook/Pro or offer significantly more capability than the iPhone? Please offer some suggestions. It definitely won't b pocket-sized it it's 7 inches. Is a 10 inch model going to be significantly smaller than 13 inch macbook?
