Firefox cancels Christmas for its mobile developers

Fennec will be out very soon
Tue Dec 22 2009, 13:00

THE MOBILE VERSION of the Mozilla Firefox web browser is almost upon us, according to an interview with the manager responsible for it.

In an interview with the BBC, Jay Sullivan of Mozilla said that the firm was working hard to get its mobile browser out between now and New Year's, suggesting that the firm's developers will all be renamed Bob Cratchit for the next week or so. Sullivan told the Beeb that the browser, called Fennec for now, was 'days away' from launching and could be released before the end of the year. As long as the firm manages to keep people in the office over the holiday period, that is.

When it is released Fennec will initially work on Nokia's N900 handset, and thus will be available from the Ovi store. However, according to Sullivan Firefox is developing versions for other handset operating systems including Google's Android and, for some reason, the Windows one.

Sullivan added that developing for the Iphone was more tricky. "Apple is very restrictive. It doesn't allow other browsers," he told the BBC. "As it's a pretty closed platform we don't see that happening soon."

We expect the families of said Mozilla developers to get mouse mats, personalised music CDs and petrol station forecourt flowers for Christmas presents. Our condolences to them. µ

The new Opera 10 beta 2 is absolutely brilliant. Granted IE mobile is awful, but you should give the new Opera a bash.

windows version suprising?

"Firefox is developing versions for other handset operating systems including Google's Android and, for some reason, the Windows one."

Windows mobile is the one platform that most desperately needs the browser, as it's currently stuck between IE4-based pocketie or Opera

Bah Humbug

Right, it's christmas, I have to work too and feeling grumpy. Time to rant...

Firstly, J - you mean 15/1. There are not 15 months in the year.

Secondly, Mr Author - "over the holiday period"? I thought this was a British site, and in Britain we are not scared to say that it's Christmas.

Thirdly, Duncan - funniest comment of the year, very well done sir!

Really..

Who the hell is going to lose their life if Fennec is released by year end instead of by 1/15 that this has to get out at the expense of developers and their friends and families?

Sometimes people have their priorities all out of whack...

Not a non-profit

The Mozilla Corporation isn't a non-profit. It is owned by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation but they are two different entities.

is it worth it?

Don't you love when a non-profit organization cancels Christmas for some of its workers just to meet a random deadline?

Apple and iPhone aren't monopolies so the same rules don't apply.
They're just cunts

WTF?

"Apple is very restrictive. It doesn't allow other browsers," - didn't Microsoft get massively fined for not actively advertising other browsers? Surely to actively prevent other browsers, Apple's not playing even remotely fair?!

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
