Android is big in the mobile OS game
ACCORDING TO STATISTICS from Comscore, Google's Android OS has made a quick and big impression on US mobile users.
User statistics compiled by the firm show that Android has had an impact on Americans already and is the second most popular platform for accessing social media sites and mobile media.
"Google's Android platform has continued to gain awareness among U.S. consumers. In August 2009, just 22 percent of mobile users had heard of the Android, while in November 2009 this figure had reached 37 percent, largely prompted by the Verizon Droid advertising campaign launched in the fall," said the firm in a statement.
"The Comscore study found that not only is general awareness increasing about Android, but intent to purchase an Android-supported device is also increasing among mobile phone users." Seventeen percent of those surveyed expressed a desire to buy a handset with the OS in the next three months, the firm added.
If you'd expected to see Windows Mobile in the clear lead, you'd have been wrong, and we would suspect that you might not have travelled on any form of public transport within the last year. The most popular OS amongst users was the Apple one found on the Iphone.
"Users of the Apple Iphone were most likely to consume mobile media, with 94 percent of users doing so in September 2009, while 92 percent of Android device users, predominantly T-Mobile G1 users, engaged in mobile media activities, 12 percentage points higher than an average smartphone user," explained Comscore.
Comscore believes that the simularities between the Android and Apple operating systems will lead to the former's users behaving more and more like the latter's.
So, twice as bad train journeys to look forward to then. µ

Multitouch isn't a platform specific functionality. It comes down to whether the application, widget or software component is programmed to support it. Because many android phones use resistive unitouch displays, mutlitouch functionality isn't programmed in for many apps.

My friend was showing me his new htc hd2 that he ordered from overseas (I'm in canada),

It's super fast (1ghz snapdragon), the ui is sleek and very responsive, it integrates very nicely with windows, and from what I could tell is thinner and has a nicer screen than an iphone.
Personally I would have bought one immediately if our carrier (rogers) stocked them.
After seeing it I read some hd2 vs iphone comparisions and it genuinely does sound like a better phone (at least in my opinion) and apparently my friends as well.
Anyways, before you count windows mobile out I think you should see what they have. At the end of the day most of the iphone apps are just gimmicks and there's a whole lot of people who don't like apple much.

I have a WinMo 6.1 HTC Touch HD, can I back it up and install Andriod on it?
Are mobile phone os's like PC os's? I assume not, just thought I would ask.
Winmo isn't going anywhere. Microsoft has the cash to keep going until they finally get it right. Winmo 6.5 is a huge improvement and I imagine 7 is going to be pretty sweet. And they also have that little thing called .net that has a huge development community so its only a matter of time, really.
With all that said, android is still bad ass.
I see entirely too many posts that windows mobile is on its way out. Im assuming that those of you who have those comments have yet to see windows mobile 6.5 as MS has entirely redesigned the UI.
Also, HTC has been and will always be at the top of my list due to the customization options. The new Manilla 2.5 ( the HTC UI added on top of WinMo) makes for an amazingly fast and finger friendly OS. Also, The number of FREE apps is limitless!
Please do some research before bashing things that you know nothing about....

I had a winmo. Couldnt wait to get rid of it.
It's hilarious that MS stuck with trying to use a Win95 interface on something clearly better suited to 3.11.
Epic fail.
Seriously, The HTC P3600i probably beats my Nokia N73 as the worst phone I've ever had.
Now because of that I had to get a new one with the following specifications:
Not Symbian
Not Winmo
Not Nokia
Not HTC
The Samsung i7500 Galaxy seems to be a perfectly competant little phone. One minor issue with USB not auto dismounting, and I'd prefer a predictive text 12 key numerical touchpad, but I have my fingers crossed that both of those will be possible to change.
Out of all the mobile phone operating systems, Windows Mobile is the saddest case. Microsoft can't attract many software developers to make apps for it any more. It has lost the business users it once had. With the market share in free fall, it's just a matter of time before the whole platform gets axed.
Meanwhile, Android is doing really well, with 20,000 applications in the store after just 1 year, and a multitude of handset makers jumping on board.
