Fake Steve Jobs attacks AT&T

Stupid 'joke' isn't funny
Fri Dec 18 2009, 13:25

WHAT MIGHT HAVE started out as a joke appears to have gained some alarming momentum.

Dan Lyons, blogging as Fake Steve Jobs, has called on AT&T users to show their service dissatisfaction by trying to overwhelm the network with data-intensive tasks. "Operation Chokehold", as he called his incitement to flash-mob mischief, hopes to shut down the US AT&T 3G network at 3pm today and appears to have gained some support from the Iphone rabble.

While it is possible that no one will actually hear the call, so to speak, Lyons blog post has led to a public airing of dissatisfaction with the AT&T network.

The network was appointed by Steve Jobs to carry his shiny Iphone and users were forbidden to use anything else. However AT&T's wireless data network performance has shown that it is not really up to the task appointed by Jobs and frequently bumps users from 3G to 2G speeds instead.

Lyons seems a bit worried that his "joke" might have gotten out of control. In his blog he wrote the stunt could be illegal and that "Dear Leader might be facing years of prison time for his role in inciting this peaceful protest."

In fact he is probably more worried that AT&T will sue him for damages if the network goes tits up because of the stunt he instigated. However, so far it has apparently refrained from making any allegations that the protest is "illegal".

Meanwhile news groups are all atwitter about how bad the service is. Comments include those from people saying they wish they had not signed up to the service for two years and claims by punters that they had been mislead by AT&T's service coverage. All up it is the sort of publicity that AT&T can't be happy with.

If Lyons' irresponsible call to take down AT&T's network is heard and people do decide to flood the network with bogus downloads, any problems will likely be confined to local metropolitan areas, but it still could be somewhat embarrassing for AT&T.

The giant US telco likely is making a bit of money from the Iphone, but it could find that its network needs expensive upgrading to cope with the bandwidth demand.

There is a rumour that Jobs' Mob is considering allowing Verizon to start selling the Iphone soon, so that will also give users a chance to vote with their feet.

There's more here. µ

AT&T loves George W Bush

AT&T illegally spied on Americans at the request of George W. Bush.

So many Americans would rather have their Iphones than their Constitution.

If you support Apple, you support AT&T whether you own an IPhone or not. Shame on you morons.

I like the stunt, he shouldn't chicken out.

AT&T are more likely to suffer, not him. What he has done is to make AT&T respond by putting in place the necessary network resources to handle the data traffic.

If AT&T can make their network handle this load, then AT&T will come out of this looking good.

If AT&T fail then ha ha ha.

Forgetting the ETF

If there was another network people could still not 'vote with their feet' since there will be an 'early termination fee' for leaving a contract that can be quite high.

all eur Ifonez belone to us's Haulage

k, we have, (for the ultra noobs, obviously not for iTards because its right for them to pay €1,000 for an unlocked phone)....blacksn0w

ani iFone from any supplier, whitest they are probably the best i-distributor in the apple/sIr steve ieyes, they are still stocking probably the most i-overpriced any-phone in the world.

More importantly, at full market retail value, or anal contract..., (@tards this is the only way to get a virtual personal endorsement by the great 'reality distortion' steve jobs,
if u paid a lot, steve endorses you, if you got it cheaper, its not a real iTard fone endorsed by sIr steve, and you're a wintard or summit?

tbh, anyone with faith in either win or apple is a *tard, and thats comin from an old appletalk winsysadin -tard
and i aint on a personal level used linux, but linux runs all the markets win and apple envision themselves to comtrol?

anyway, if you're NOT an idiot/Tard then just goto
blackra1n.com, which fyi jailbreaks all Ifones, then after reboot....
blacksn0w is installed, just look for it in apps, run it, pick one of three apps to unlock
(this is the bit iTards get stuck on, sIr steve didnt tell them which one to pick??? the i-noob!)

anyway, something that cost you about $200 is now worth the same as the allegedly €1,000 iTard phone, except now its unlocked and workin for YOU for €200, not sIr steve or his AT&T mob fanclub paying €1,000 for an Ifone!!!!
(tbh, v.old N95 is in may ways superior & more features)

any btw, in case ur thinkin Ifones dont cost €1K, on expansys.ie, they currently list €974 for top model, december 19 2009
Apple iPhone 3G S EU, Black, 32GB
(Ifone recession sale?)

FYI@Itards
(itards response=Hey! he said one thousand!, its only €974, what a saving? quick get two, mega savings! tell the boss, we not gettin value for monies from apple unless we always buy more of stuff, all the time, regardless if anyone has a better product...cheaper!!"

Illegal?

Illegal for what? "Over"burdening an under-resourced network with traffic that users are *entitled* to have? Enjoy your overzealous trunking AT&T!

@Jonth

Its a simple mater of changing the transceiver to get a much larger more stable network.

iPhone on Verizon? Unlikely

The iPhone supports two air interfaces: GSM and UMTS. Verizon's network's air interface is CDMA/EVDO, a totally incompatible standard. Unless Apple decides to produce a special CDMA/EVDO version of the iPhone just for this purpose (unlikely given the size of the market relative to the other opportunities they could follow), moving to Verizon is a non-starter.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
